Rian Johnson is fast establishing himself as one of those select few who can genre hop quite easily. Thus far, he's gone from a distinctive and unique neo-noir in Brick to a charming caper in The Brothers Bloom to now a new twist on time-travel with Looper. That's not even mentioning his work as director on the critically acclaimed series Breaking Bad which includes two episodes, one ("Fly") a bottle episode and the other ("Fifty-One") an episode that fits the Breaking Bad aesthetic perfectly while still managing to set itself apart.
It seems that Kurt Sutter does listen to Sons of Anarchy's detractors after all, or so "Laying Pipe" would suggest. Following last season, critics called him out on his reluctance to kill off major players. With the exception of Piney who, like Clay now, was on his way there already, no one of significance was visited by the grim spectre of death. Furthermore, multiple characters like Clay and Juice, survived in spite of their deaths appearing as the only recourse for the season's events.
Now that The Avengers and The Dark Knight Rises have passed, that leaves filmgoers with one last box-office behemoth to look forward to, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. Due out at the end of the year, December 14th to be exact, director Peter Jackson will be returning to Middle Earth as he hopes to once again break that fabled billion dollar barrier at the worldwide box-office.
Reuniting the world’s only piano-rock band, The Sound of the Life of the Mind, outside of a couple songs, doesn’t so much rock as it does present a rock-solid reminder of what happens when these three men come together.
Last season on Sons of Anarchy, multiple characters whose deaths seemed inevitable, found themselves on the receiving end of a miraculous reprieve. It left fans wondering if creator Kurt Sutter had it in him to off any of his dearly beloved. Wonder no further, though, because according to Ace Showbiz, next week's episode will bring with it the death of "a very important person in the SAMCRO family."
"Authority Vested" could be categorized as a holding pattern of sorts, with Sons of Anarchy's main cast circling one another yet staying within clearly set parameters. With a couple noteworthy exceptions, the episode is mostly talk and little action and Sutter spends the episode mostly on set-up for what is bound to be a tension-filled scenario, that being Jax, Tig, and Chibs locked up, not knowing when or how Pope will come at them. In short, he had to get all his ducks prepared and in a row before he sent them forth into the shooting gallery.
Seeing Burton return to the stop-motion form, like an old friend to him, one can't help but be enlivened with optimism, though of the cautious variety. Expanding on his early short-film, Frankenweenie has all the makings of a return to form, as every glimpse of the film so far has displayed immense promise.
The Dark Knight Rises is primed to become a movie watched and debated for years to come. While its box-office performance was a bit of a disappointment in light of the its record-setting counterpart in the superhero genre, The Avengers, it's still safe to assume that many a die-hard came back for repeat viewings.
Poll fans of Matthew Vaughn's cult hit Kick-Ass on which character it was that made the movie for them and it would come as no surprise that Hit-Girl woul come out on top. Whatever your opinion on the character is, she certainly got people talking.
