Blue Beetle/ Warner Brothers

Latest DC News: Toxic Batman stans pray for ‘Blue Beetle’ to fail as James Gunn lets slip possible reason for his MCU departure

Sometimes it seems like even DCU fans don't like the DCU.

It seems Warner Bros and the DCU can’t catch a break. The Blue Beetle trailer has been on the web for just shy of 30 hours, and already certain “fans” are hoping for another bust for WB studios. Their ire comes from four little words at the tail end of the commercial, and in typical internet fashion, the backlash is disproportionate to the supposed crime. Meanwhile, James Gunn may have given some insight into his decision to leave Marvel studios; the director has expressed discontent with the studio messing with his creative visions in the past, but the company’s interference with his plans for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 may have been just the push Gunn needed to make the jump to Co-CEO over at DC Studios. In other news, fans over at Reddit have decided they have found the perfect choice for the next Joker in the DCEU. While it’s hard to disagree with the acting chops of their top pick, we do have to quietly remind fans that the rubber-faced thespian in question is pretty sure he’s retired.

James Gunn may have dropped a clue surrounding his decision to depart the MCU. The director admitted he was less than stoked when studio execs shoehorned Thor Odinson into the Guardian’s storyline. While Taika Waititi was able to help Gunn rework the screenplay and remove the god of Thunder, the snafu may have been enough to help the film maker say goodbye to Marvel. With Gunn accepting his role as show runner and Co-CEO of the new DCEU, he’ll hopefully never have to experience the sting of studio interference again. Perhaps he should talk to David Ayers about that one.

Fans throw Jim Carrey’s name in the ring for a Joker

Batman Forever/ Warner Bros

Fans have thrown in their top pick for the actor they want to fill the Joker’s plus sized clown shoes. Folks over on Reddit are sure that the only way to bring the Clown Prince to life is to lean on the excellent comedic and dramatic stylings of the one-and-only Jim Carrey. While the Batman Forever alum certainly has the chops, fans seem to have forgotten about his probable retirement from acting and his work as a political artist (though he told CNN it’s all about Mangos now). The actor has been candid about returning if a good enough project ever crosses his desk, so if James Gunn is interested, the script had better be tight.

Some people need to learn to relax a little

Blue Beetle/ Warner Brothers

The trailer for Blue Beetle dropped yesterday, and the forthcoming film has certainly generated some serious buzz. The latest DC movie follows college grad Jaime Reyes (Xolo Maridueña) and his superhero journey after an alien bioweapon fuses to his skeleton. Under the name Blue Beetle, Reyes battles mysterious villains in an effort to save both his family and the world from unknown dangers. The trailer honestly looks fantastic, and the hype it generated certainly got many people talking about the upcoming feature. Unfortunately, you can’t please everyone, and a certain group of toxic fans were quick to take umbrage with a four-word quip from legendary comedian George Lopez. Lopez, who plays Blue Beetle’s Uncle Rudy, shouts “Batman is a fascist!” just before the commercial ends.

Rather than take the comment as the joke it is, Batman stans jumped to worst possible outcome, immediately praying for Blue Beetle to crash and burn. Some fans went so far as to accuse Warner Bros of trying to drive away viewers with the remark so they could get some tax breaks. While the company was forced to do that for the defunct Batgirl movie, it’s hard to imagine that’s the end goal with Blue Beetle. With DC’s poor performance at the box-office so far this year, there is no doubt the company needs the film to appeal to a large audience. With a star stacked cast and plenty of new talent to boot, Blue Beetle has already piqued plenty of interest. We still have several months to go before we see if the death throws of the DCU has anything decent to offer.
