7 Remasters We’d Love To Hear About At E3 2016

Love them or hate them, remasters are here to stay. They're a great way to bring well loved games from past generation(s) to a potentially new audience, while also allowing returning fans to play the games they love on new hardware, and in new and improved fashion. Of course, they're also a moneymaking machine, acting as a method for earning cash to put towards sequels and other new projects. Although we agree that, at times, this trend has gotten a bit ahead of itself, we here at We Got This Covered have enjoyed revisiting some of our favourite games from yesteryear through remasters and definitive collections. We get that some folks hate them, and see them as money grabs, but it's nice to be able to pop in an updated classic and enjoy it on better hardware. Everything is a business, after all, and gaming is no different, which makes it easier to accept the technique's financially-influenced side, as well. Of course, now that E3 2016 is just days away from getting started, it won't be long before we'll know exactly what games the industry's biggest and brightest have up their sleeves for 2016 and the future ahead. Most will be new titles, but thinking that they will all be entirely new IPs and sequels would just be silly. There's no doubt in our minds that at least a couple remaster projects will be announced at next week's expo, especially since rumours have already begun to circulate. So, on that note, read on for 7 remastered video games we hope to hear about at E3 2016. 7) The Mass Effect Trilogy This may simply be a pipe dream given EA's lack of remasters, but fans of the Mass Effect series would surely be all for an updated release of its three acclaimed games. Commander Shepherd's arc has gone down as one of the most beloved new IPs of the last generation, and while we wait for the next intergalactic excursion, it'd be nice to replay the first three in full 1080p with improved visuals and effects. On a more personal note, I must admit that I've been quietly hoping for this project to be announced, as I've yet to actually play through any of the Mass Effect games. As a longtime gamer and fan of the RPG genre though, it's something that I plan to rectify one day. If a remastered set was announced, it'd definitely give me the kick in the ass I need to dive into this acclaimed trilogy. 6) The BioShock Series Having been rumoured about for quite some time now, it'd be great if all this talk about a collection featuring at least the first two BioShock games would come to fruition. All three being included would be ideal, though, given how they all tie into one another and how shitty it is when supposed collections leave one or two entries out. Since its original announcement and its triumphant release, the BioShock series has received critical and fan acclaim, all of which has been well-deserved. Sure, its second outing wasn't up to par with its first, but it still had a lot to offer and was a solid game overall. BioShock Infinite, with its trip to the skies, was better and deserves to be considered in conversations about the top games of the last generation. The thing about BioShock is that it's just so unique, with regards to its settings, its lore and its gameplay. Sure, it's a shooter at heart, but there's so much to the game world that it feels unlike anything else. Granted, it's the plasmid powers that truly help make you feel like you're playing something different and truly special, as they act as visceral game changers that make for deviously fun gameplay. With updated visuals, better effects and the polish that could come with a remastered effort, the BioShock games would flourish on current gen hardware. It'd also be great to replay them, as Rapture is easily one of the greatest locations gaming has ever taken us to. 5) Far Cry 1-3 Say what you will about the Far Cry series, but there's no denying that it has its own identity. The vacation from Hell storylines that permeate throughout it are each unique and interesting, and the locations it's taken us to have always been fun to explore. In fact, two of the most entertaining and visceral open worlds I've ever ventured through happen to be Far Cry 2's Africa and the exotic beaches of Far Cry 3. Although it's surely a lot of work to remaster more than one game, getting updated versions of the first three Far Cry titles would be a great thing. I didn't have a computer capable of playing through the first entry, so I've still yet to play it outside of its expansion on the original Xbox. And, as mentioned above, Far Cry 2 and Far Cry 3 are personal favourites and exist as two of my most beloved games from the last generation of consoles. If just one of these games could be updated and rereleased, I'd be happy. After playing through Far Cry 4 (which was my favourite game of 2016) and recently almost 100%-ing Far Cry Primal, I'm itching for another bullet-filled vacation. A new game would be great, but a remaster would fit me just fine for now. Hell, I can just imagine how beautiful visually enhanced versions of Far Cry 2 or 3 would be. 4) Red Dead Redemption Rumours are constantly circulating about Red Dead Redemption receiving the remaster treatment from Rockstar Games, and given some of the information that has been found in recent days, it's looking like a real possibility. Here's hoping that these rumours end up coming true, though, because we're not the only ones who would love to revisit John Marston's rough and tumble world on present day consoles. And no, we're not talking about backwards compatibility. Back when it was announced, Red Dead Redemption wowed and amazed us with its rich-looking world and gorgeous visuals, and it ended up delivering on both of those fronts and more. Our hope is that, while announcing a brand new Red Dead game, Rockstar will also mention that Red Dead Redemption is in the process of being reworked and updated for the Xbox One and PS4, or whatever their successors end up being. That would give us the best of both worlds, and it's surely nothing that anyone would ever scoff at. 3) The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Although all the signs point towards a remastered version of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim being announced during Bethesda's E3 Press Conference, nothing has been made official or set in stone as of yet, which is why this gem has made it onto our list. Despite being several years old now, Skyrim continues to be a fan favourite and gets many hours' worth of playtime to this day. It's all for good reason, of course, given how great the game was and continues to be, despite its woes on PlayStation hardware. Just thinking of an improved, updated and prettier version of the thing makes our mouths salivate, too, as it's a perfect candidate for the remaster treatment. Skyrim is a huge game, with lots to offer, and re-releasing it with improved bells and whistles would help offset the wait for the series' next entry. If released during the summer, it would also give us an excuse to stay in and enjoy air conditioning, or at least avoid getting sunburned. 2) Fallout 3 As great as Skyrim is, Fallout 3 was simply better. At least, in this writer's eyes. As such, it's one of the top games I'd like to revisit through this relatively recent trend of updating and re-releasing well liked games. Fallout 3 is a large-scale epic, which was hard to put down. It had an engrossing quest line, lots of great side quests that enriched its vast world and tons to explore and discover. If Bethesda were to polish and improve the game for modern devices, it'd surely be well-worth returning to. Hell, it'd quickly become one of my most anticipated releases, even though I put close to one hundred hours into the original release and all of its DLC. 1) The Dead Space Trilogy Since Batman: Return to Arkham has already been confirmed, the first position on this list now goes to the Dead Space trilogy. Or, at the very least, the series' first two outings. Dead Space was a game that I bought into day one and absolutely loved. It was challenging, disturbing and had a great sense of both environment and atmosphere. You never knew what was going to come at you from around the next corner, or if something was going to pop out from above or below. I'm not ashamed to admit that I jumped at least once or twice when I played through it. Who knows if a new Dead Space game is in the works, but I definitely hope that one is. Although a lot of people disliked the direction the third game went in, I enjoyed it when I rented it close to a year after its release. It wasn't up to par with the first two, but wasn't nearly as much of a downgrade as people made it out to be. At least, that's my opinion, and reasoning for why I'd be glad if it was made part of an eventual Dead Space Trilogy Remastered Collection. Just think of the dark and dimly lit hallways of the Ishimura as presented in full HD while running on the PlayStation 4 or Xbox One. As if the original Dead Space -- and its first sequel for that matter -- didn't have enough atmosphere, being playable on current-gen hardware would truly make them pop with disturbed dread.
