From the sounds of things, the Borderlands mythos is currently being expanded through the development of a brand new game. That is, if a leak from GamePointsNow is correct.

Earlier today, the aforementioned website broke news regarding the apparent existence of an in-development project called Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel! A new, stand-alone release, it apparently helps to bridge the gap between the first Borderlands game and its sequel, and will centre upon Handsome Jack and his four lieutenants as they search for an alien artifact. Granted, his name won’t be Jack in this rumoured entry, because, at that time in the series’ plot line, he was a mere programmer who went by the name of John.

Those who’ve played through Borderlands 2 and its DLC will most-likely recognize the names of a couple of the four proposed playable characters: Athena the Gladiator, Willhelm the Enforcer, Nisha the Lawbringer and a militarized claptrap conveniently named Fragtrap.

If everything turns out to be true, Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel! will take place on a Pandoran moon called Elpis, and a Hyperion space station that orbits the planet. On top of that, the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC title will apparently introduce two new weapon types (cryo and laser), and will also allow both gravity and oxygen to affect its players.

Take all of this with a grain of salt for now, because nothing has been confirmed. Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford also previously stated that a Borderlands sequel wasn’t in the works, but, then again, this rumoured 2K Australia project is considered a “pre-sequel.” Here’s hoping that this leak is correct, though, because more Borderlands would definitely be appreciated.

Stay tuned for more information regarding Borderlands: A Pre-Sequel as it develops. Actually…if it develops.
