Initially revealed a full seven years ago at E3 in 2006, Final Fantasy Versus XIII has simmered in the bowels of development hell for aeons. But now, at Sony’s E3 press conference, Square Enix has revealed that the game has been rebranded as Final Fantasy XV and will launch on the Playstation 4.

The prestigious Japanese studio lifted the veil on cutscenes and some gameplay for the title, which seemed to highlight a more dynamic battle system than previous iterations. Focusing on the princely protagonist; Noctis Lucis Caelum, Final Fantasy XV looks to inhabit a familiarly visceral futuristic – almost medieval – world and will surely boast the grind-inducing depth the series is known for. What’s more, the party-based mechanics have been reported to mirror that of Kingdom Hearts, which in turn promises a wealth of customisation options.

Industry murmurings had suggested that Versus XIII had ceased to exist, while others hinted towards the game mutating into a new Final Fantasy title. Now though, it seems the latter piece of speculation proved true following Square Enix’s recent announcement.
