For players of the battle royale that remember Season 7 as if it were yesterday, one memory likely to stick out is the introduction of a certain aircraft. As is the case for many of the vehicles Epic adds to Fortnite‘s sandbox though, initial excitement for the X-4 Stormwing promptly shifted to become a burning hatred due largely to its overpowered nature. In its original form, players were able to stay among the clouds indefinitely, only swooping in to pick off any vulnerable ground dwellers. For obvious reasons, Epic ultimately decided to vault the Stormwing at Season 8’s beginning, but now it’s back.

For competitive-minded folks, that might sound like the worst idea Epic’s ever had, but don’t worry – history isn’t about to repeat itself. This time around, the aircraft is confined to its own Limited-Time Mode – Air Royale – where everyone starts behind on an even footing.

Available for duos only, players begin each round already at the pilot controls. The aim of the game, as if it needed spelling out, is to eliminate others wrestling for control of your airspace with respawns disabled after the third. For those considering going to ground for a change of tactics – don’t bother. Touching the ground will immediately result in elimination, while planes will explode if parked for more than a few seconds. As hinted at via previous Fortnite leaks, players running low on lives can also attempt to hijack the planes of others to replenish reserves and improve or refuel their vehicle via random upgrades that fall from the sky.

Now that you’re equipped with all the details, it’s time to fly. Good luck out there, pilots!
