While most people are anxiously awaiting the full reveal of the Nintendo Switch (which is set to take place in two weeks from now), it seems like Nintendo is still focusing on the Wii U, at least, when it comes to its Virtual Console service.
While there are no press releases or trailers to mark its arrival, according to a listing on Nintendo’s official website, the classic kart racer Mario Kart 64 will be released tomorrow, on December 29, for the Wii U Virtual Console. A description on Nintendo’s website reads:
Put the pedal to the metal in this worthy successor to the Super NES® classic, Super Mario Kart®. With improved courses and a revolutionary head-to-head four-player mode, Mario Kart 64 is sure to win the heart of any race-driving fan. The game includes 20 different courses filled with dips, valleys, jumps, tunnels and bridges. Smooth, precise control will bring players back time and time again for freewheeling fun.
Better yet, this release of Mario Kart 64 will make use of the Wii U Gamepad, allowing for “off-TV play.” It’ll also allow up to four players to duke it out on the racetrack and support the Wii U Pro Controller and Classic Controller/Wii Remote Plus.
If you’re looking for a newer entry in the Mario Kart series, be sure to check out our review for Mario Kart 7 (on the Nintendo 3DS) or Mario Kart 8 (on the Wii U). For those looking for some karting action on the upcoming Nintendo Switch, it looks like an updated version of Mario Kart 8 will be releasing shortly after launch.
