Rise Of The Tomb Raider Adorns February’s Game Informer Cover

Another month, another Game Informer cover. In lieu of Naughty Dog’s Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End, the publication has switched gears to focus on another mascot of the action-adventure genre, a certain heroine that goes by the name of Lara Croft. That’s right, for the month of February, Game Informer will place Crystal Dynamics’ Rise of the Tomb Raider front and center, meaning we can expect plenty of new information pertaining to the sequel in the coming weeks.

To kick things off, the outlet has released a pair of screenshots from the follow-up, which will see Miss. Croft make tracks for Siberia to uncover the lost secrets of immortality — hence the snowy locales. With new threats to confront in an environment as deadly as the animals that roam it, let’s just say our weathered protagonist certainly knows how to pick a holiday.

But perhaps the one key tenet of Rise of the Tomb Raider that has us reeling with anticipation is Crystal Dynamics’ method of approach. Take the E3 reveal trailer, for instance, which sees a shaken Lara literally on the edge of her seat whilst meeting a psychiatrist. Post-traumatic stress disorder is a well worn path for a sequel aiming to be darker and edgier than its predecessor, but the tone of the footage was perfectly in tune with the foundations that the studio had already laid with 2013’s original. Here’s hoping the final product delivers on this potential.

If there’s one thing that has somewhat overshadowed Rise of the Tomb Raider, though, it’s Microsoft’s timed-exclusive deal, which means that the upcoming sequel won’t be available on PlayStation platforms upon launch. Mind you, said partnership “has a duration,’ and considering that Uncharted 4 is debuting in and around the same window exclusively on PS4, such a deal may just benefit everyone.

Much like Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End last month, we can expect to learn much more about Rise of the Tomb Raider as the month wears on. For now, check out the stills in the gallery below and let us know whether or not you’re excited for Lara’s next adventure.
