We Got This Covered’s Indie Game Of The Year

For most gamers, 2016’s calendar will be remembered best for an array of AAA titles. The likes of Uncharted 4, and more recently The Last Guardian and Final Fantasy XV are just a few landmark games that have punctuated a solid year for the industry. In fact, almost every month brought with it new television commercials or billboard advertisement touting the latest release.

10) ABZÛ

Abzû is the ultimate expression of video games as art. A gorgeous underwater environment is the setting for this tranquil Journey-like deep sea adventure, which is a true video game “experience,” with its beautiful aesthetic, harmonious score and mysterious, abstract storytelling.

Players control an unnamed protagonist as she rides the current past all manner of aquatic life, observing enormous whales and befriending Great White sharks. There’s even a mechanic that allows one to meditate. It’s very much a soothing affair.

Overall, Abzû might be slightly cumbersome to control in comparison to the iconic Journey, and it’s narrative not quite as deep, but while it doesn’t quite reach those same heights, it’s still a must-play title.

9) Shu

Shu is an adorable side-scrolling platformer brought to us by developer Coatsink. While borrowing from iconic classics such as Donkey Kong and Rayman, Shu forges its own identity with an endearing aesthetic and quality gameplay. In fact, you’d be hard-pressed to find a better pure platforming experience this year.

Gameplay emphasizes speed, and Shu’s tight controls make it an absolute joy to play. As gamers navigate its world, they’ll rescue Shu’s buddies that rather adorably hold hands, granting special abilities such as double jump, time manipulation and ground thumping.

With only 5 different stages, Shu is short and sweet, but there’s certainly replay value in finding collectables and beating time trial challenges, meaning the game deservedly earns its spot on our list.
