10 Things We Learned From The Avengers: Infinity War Super Bowl Spot

After years of waiting, last November finally delivered our first look at Avengers: Infinity War, the first installment of the upcoming two-part event that will act as a culmination of everything we've seen in the MCU so far. As such, fans are prepared to wade through every little piece of the film that comes our way in order to eke out as much info about it as possible. This weekend, we got another treat courtesy of a short TV spot that aired during the Super Bowl. Despite only lasting 30 seconds, the teaser was made up of mostly fresh material and so, when put together with the first trailer, serves to really help us begin to piece together the storyline and order of events of the movie. From Iron Man's new armour and unlikely team-ups to a glimpse at a superhero-filled battle royale, here our some of the awesome moments packed into the Avengers: Infinity War Super Bowl TV spot and what they might hint at. There was a lot crammed into this preview, but we've unpacked it all for you and you can dive right in on the next page. Peter And Tony's Strange Team-Up We've gotten used to seeing Robert Downey Jr.'s Iron Man and Tom Holland's Spider-Man forming a double act, after their mentor/student relationship has been explored in both Captain America: Civil War and Spider-Man: Homecoming. Now, though, this TV spot reveals that they'll have another member added to their dynamic in Infinity War: Benedict Cumberbatch's Doctor Strange. Fans have often wanted to see Downey and Cumberbatch, two Sherlock Holmeses, together in the MCU, so this is certainly an exciting moment. As with many shots we see in this teaser and the previous one, this short snippet shows the three Avengers looking up in awe at something in the sky. Though, hilariously, Peter is for some reason looking in a different direction than Tony and Strange. As for where this comes in the movie, it probably hails from the second act, as Peter is in his Iron Spider get-up in this scene, whereas subsequent shots show Parker on his own and in his classic togs. A Vision Of Vision In the last trailer for Infinity War, we glimpsed one intriguing scene. It saw Wanda Maximoff sharing an intimate moment with Vision - but a Vision who appeared human, with Paul Bettany showing up sans make-up for once. How was this happening? A slightly different clip of this same scene appears in last night's TV spot and reveals what causes this vision of Vision. Here, we see Elizabeth Olsen's Scarlet Witch using her powers on the Mind Infinity Stone in Vision's head. It seems, then, that Wanda is able to charge the Stone somehow to increase its powers, thereby possibly giving it the ability to show Vision in a different form. This is a neat scene, as it raises questions about what would happen if Wanda got hold of the Mind Stone, which was previously used by Baron Von Strucker to give her her powers. Thor, Rocket And Groot The big "squee"-inducing moment hidden at the end of the first Infinity War trailer was a brief (and silent) cameo for the Guardians of the Galaxy - which paired them with Chris Hemsworth's Thor! Again, Star-Lord's team of misfit heroes don't appear too much in this TV spot, although we do see one short shot of them sneaking down some stairs. Judging by some leaked footage released the other month, this could be the lead-in to the scene which features Thanos torturing the Collector. What the TV spot does give us, though, is the great image of seeing Thor riding a ship with Rocket and Groot, with Star-Lord, Gamora and Drax nowhere to be seen. This suggests that this is some sort of side mission for the trio, while the rest of the Guardians perhaps go and deal with Thanos on the front line with the Avengers. Based on the evidence, this side mission is probably Thor's trip to find a new weapon: the mythological battle-axe Jarnbjorn. Another fun little detail that's easy to miss is that Groot is busy playing on his games console. This follows on from a post-credits scene of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 in which Teen Groot was revealed to have developed a typical adolescent personality. Science Bros Reunited One of the most beloved bromances in the MCU is that between Tony Stark and Bruce Banner AKA the Science Bros. Since first meeting in 2012's The Avengers, the pair have bonded over their passion for science, despite having very different personalities. This Infinity War TV spot captures the moment where they reunite, after Hulk has been away in space for a couple of years. The full trailer saw Hulk crashing to Earth in Strange's Sanctum Sanctorum, which we believe happens once Thanos sieges Thor's Asgardian refugee ship. So, this scene is likely where Bruce warns Tony, Strange and the other heroes that some big purple-faced alien threat is coming. "It's all been leading to this," Tony says, wearing a heavy expression. You can see why he's so down. Everything Tony's been doing over the past few films has been to protect the people of Earth the best he can. But now he's probably realizing that his actions have had the opposite effect: as the Avengers are currently in tatters. Loki's Last Stand? We get only the briefest snippet of Loki in this TV spot. It doesn't say a lot on its own but, when put together with footage seen in the first trailer for Infinity War, it gains a larger significance. In that previous trailer, Loki is seen presenting the Tesseract to someone unknown. It doesn't take much to imagine that this is Thanos, whom has torn his way through the Asgardian refugee ship to get his hands on the Infinity Stone. This moment caused quite the stir amongst fans who were left hotly debating whether Loki betrayed his people to Thanos or whether he's actually an innocent in all this. This brief shot keeps things ambiguous. Depending on how you read Tom Hiddleston's expressions in this scene, though, Loki is either looking at the destruction around him as a guilty man or he's trying to keep his cool and think his way out of the situation. Spidey In Space The first trailer for Infinity War revealed that Thanos' attack on Earth would kick off with an assault on New York (where else?) that would see him send a colossal wheel-like structure above the city. This event was witnessed by Peter Parker, whose spider-sense was set off when he was on his way to school. Last night's TV spot reveals what we all suspected: that he decided to ditch his education for the day and investigate it as Spider-Man. It looks like Peter might have bitten off more than he can chew, though, as this scene sees him pull off his mask and cry out. We're not quite sure what's happening here, but it looks like he's struggling with the effort to hold onto the giant wheel. That might be because it appears to be flying up into the atmosphere, though we could be wrong. At some point later in the film, then, Peter reunites with Tony, as well as Stephen Strange, and decides to upgrade his suit to the tougher Iron Spider model that Stark first unveiled in Homecoming. Steve's New Shield One of the most meme-able moments from the first Infinity War trailer featured Black Panther ordering that someone get Steve Rogers a shield. We assumed that this would be his classic red, white and blue model, but this TV spot gives us our first glimpse at the hero formally known as Captain America's new preferred accessory. Previously, the reveal of an upcoming action figure let us see what Steve's new shield would look like, but it came across as a little bland in toy form. It appears much cooler on screen, though. As Steve stands beside King T'Challa, he's able to activate the wrist-mounted device which widens to form the shield. No doubt it's also made of vibranium, as the metal is native to Wakanda. The grey colour scheme is yet another nod to the fact that Steve is distancing himself from his star-spangled man with a new identity. Not that he's any less up for a fight. "Let's go," he tells the Wakandan king here. Tony's New Nanotech Steve Rogers isn't the only one who's getting an upgrade to his superhero costume. His old buddy/rival Tony Stark has apparently failed to resist the urge to give himself a new suit once again, too. As Tony strides along the street, no doubt preparing for a fight, he takes off his sunglasses as the Iron Man suit forms around him. Because of this, it looks like this latest design is made from nanotech. This is likely inspired by Tony's Prime Armour from the comics, a nanotech-based suit that responds to Stark's thoughts and can take on various forms, like the Hulkbuster armour. Which we might see in Infinity War, as the last trailer featured "Veronica" in action. It looks likely that this short scene follows on from Tony's reunion with Banner, and probable first meeting with Doctor Strange and Wong, at the Sanctum Sanctorum. Nebula Appears The first Infinity War trailer managed to squeeze in just about every major hero, but Nebula was nowhere to be seen. That's rectified in this TV spot, though, which reveals that Gamora's wayward sister joins the battle against her evil adoptive father at some point. And, as you can see from her fierce expression, she's itching to get her wish to snuff out her dear old dad. If you look closely, you can see that she's located in that same junk-ridden, battle-scarred landscape seen in the previous trailer, which appears to be the location of the Avengers and the Guardians' first proper confrontation with Thanos. So, this shot is likely taken from much later in the movie than the rest of the TV spot. Now we're just waiting on Hawkeye, Ant-Man and Wasp to show up in future teasers... A Battle On Two Fronts The previous trailer teased a massive battle between the Avengers and Thanos' forces in Wakanda. This TV spot reveals, though, that it will be a war fought on two fronts. While Steve Rogers leads a crack squad in the African nation, a small group of heroes will also be holding down the fort back in New York. In Wakanda, we see Black Widow riding with Dora Milaje soldiers, while Winter Soldier goes solo and runs into battle, all guns blazing. Over in NYC, meanwhile, Doctor Strange gets his magic on as Iron Man swoops in beside him. Once again, the TV spot climaxes with that instantly iconic shot of Cap, Black Panther, Black Widow, Winter Soldier, Hulk and the rest charging towards the camera in Wakanda. Finally, one extra shot features a close-up look at a smirking Thanos, serving as a reminder that Earth's Mightiest Heroes will have their work cut out for them if they're to defeat him when Avengers: Infinity War lands in theaters on May 4th.
