10 Most Awesome Moments From The X-Men: Apocalypse Trailer

This week saw the long overdue release of the first trailer for X-Men: Apocalypse (which you can see above). The first footage from Bryan Singer-directed movie premiered at this year's San Diego Comic-Con back in July, and after leaking onto the web, fans were left wondering if Fox would follow it up with an official version like Warner Bros. did with Suicide Squad. Unfortunately, though, that didn't happen. Thankfully, the wait was well worth it, as the trailer delivers in pretty much every respect. It's probably for the best that the studio waited to release it, too. After all, Apocalypse looks 100 times better than he did in those first official images from the movie, while the special effects are all top notch (the same can't be said for the clearly unfinished CGI we've recently seen in trailers for movies like Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice and The Legend of Tarzan). So, what were the most exciting and downright awesome moments in the first trailer for X-Men: Apocalypse? Join us as we take a look at the ten biggest reveals and scenes which stand out as being particularly great and what they might mean for the movie. 10) An Apocalyptic Vision Apocalypse is the most dangerous threat the X-Men have ever faced, and the trailer immediately makes it clear that if the ancient mutant's plan succeeds, the world as we know it will be destroyed. It emphasizes that with images of widespread devastation, but by far the coolest reveal here is the fact that we then see that those are Jean's visions. The events of X-Men: The Last Stand may have been wiped from continuity, but the young mutant is clearly still every bit as powerful as that version of the character. Will we get a glimpse of the Pheonix here? It would be a missed opportunity to not attempt to redo that story arc after Brett Ratner messed it up like he did. 9) The Introduction Of The Morlocks? Perhaps the most interesting moment in the trailer comes when we catch a glimpse of Caliban (played by Tómas Lemarquis) in what appears to be an underground lair. There's a very good chance that this is the home of the Morlocks, a group of mutants who fled underground due to their monstrous appearance, but even if it's not, the character's introduction is still significant. [zergpaid He has the ability to naturally track the locations of other mutants, a skill which is sure to be useful to Apocalypse, and seeing whether or not the villain transforms him into a fearsome monster a la his comic book counterpart will be a lot of fun. Introducing the Morlocks is an absolute must though. 8) A Flashback To Ancient Egypt At the end of X-Men: Days of Future Past, we got to see a young Apocalypse being worshipped in Ancient Egypt as he constructed the pyramids and his Four Horseman looked on. Seeing as the trailer for X-Men: Apocalypse includes a shot of Egypt, chances are that we'll be spending some more time with a young Apocalypse or at least when he was at the height of his power. The comics have explored this period of his life a fair bit, but Bryan Singer has the opportunity to really pick and choose what he wants from that period of the villain's life, and that's going to be very exciting to see play out. How it relates to what's happening in the present day is also incredibly intriguing. 7) The Mutant Race's New Leader Based on what we've heard in the past and what we see in this trailer, Apocalypse's grand plan is to wipe out the human race in order to create a new world for the mutants. However, his desires are no doubt selfish, too, as he wants to be worshipped as a God. Hearing Apocalypse dismiss Professor X as a "blind leader" is very cool, as is the fact that he manages to recruit Magneto to his cause. If even the Master of Magnetism is willing to go from leader to follower, then Apocalypse is clearly someone who a lot of mutants are going to rally behind. While we already know about the Four Horsemen, it will be very surprising not to see more of them join his cause here. 6) Four Horsemen A very long list of mutants have been Apocalypse's Four Horsemen over the years, leaving Bryan Singer with a number of different options. However, the foursome he's put together for the film is fantastic, with Magneto, Angel, Psylocke, and Storm making for a very unique team to put alongside the ancient villain. While it was initially thought that Apocalypse controls them, that doesn't appear to be the case here, and the glimpses we get of them in action are pretty exciting. Oddly, Psylocke doesn't really get the spotlight here, but seeing as her power require a lot of special effects, it could be that they're saving her for the next trailer. 5) X-Men Assemble While it's a shame that Bryan Singer has gone back to the black leather costumes for this take on the X-Men (especially as the 1980s lend themselves so well to more colourful outfits and stylized fashion choices), there's no denying that it's pretty awesome seeing the team aboard the Blackbird. It's obviously a little odd to see Mystique leading them into battle, but Beast being there is great, and seeing him joined by the likes of Cyclops and Jean Grey is long overdue. Why some of the other mutants aren't here (Jubilee for example) is hard to say, but it feels like X-Men: Apocalypse is going to be the movie which takes us into a new era for these characters. 4) Apocalypse Unleashed We've yet to learn the full extent of Apocalypse's powers, but the most exciting reveal in this trailer is the fact that - like his comic book counterpart - the villain is able to change his size. Based on how grounded Bryan Singer has always kept the action in these movies, it's surprising that he has this ability, but there appears to be a twist based on what's shown here. Seeing as Apocalypse is fighting a Charles Xavier with the use of his legs, chances are that this scene is taking place on some sort of psychic plane, with the villain's size increase a representation of him asserting his dominance over the leader of his X-Men - a clever way to include this particular power of his. 3) Mutants Let Loose Despite the fact that his X-Men movies are widely praised by fans, one of the biggest criticisms levelled at Bryan Singer is the fact that he doesn't adhere to the comic books. Well, based on what we see here, he's definitely embracing those for the way the mutants in X-Men: Apocalypse are being portrayed. Whether it's the way Cyclops' optic blasts tear from his eyes or Angel shooting blades from his metal wings, this looks like the most comic book-y of these movies to date, and the way Storm lands on the ground in a bolt of lightning is particularly cool. It may have taken a while, but the director finally turning to the source material for inspiration is nice to see. 2) The End Of The Human Race As I previously mentioned, Bryan Singer has had a habit of keeping his X-Men movies fairly grounded over the years, and it's that which makes the kind of epic action we see at the end of the trailer all the more surprising. It's a visual you would associate more with a Michael Bay or Roland Emmerich movie, but including scenes like this is long overdue and definitely points to the team facing their biggest threat ever in the form of Apocalypse. The action hopefully won't distract from the story too much, but if plenty of other superhero movies have taught us anything, it's that that doesn't have to be the case. It's about time the X-Men franchise caught up with the rest of them! 1) Charles Xavier Finally Becomes Professor X They've been teasing us with the prospect of Charles Xavier becoming Professor X since the end of X-Men: First Class, but it's finally going to happen in X-Men: Apocalypse. Has Fox spoiled the end of the movie by showing this? It's certainly possible, but seeing James McAvoy look so similar to Patrick Stewart is a moment that's easy to get excited about. It also points to the X-Men franchise taking a step forward and becoming something entirely new. The question remains though, what exactly is Xavier looking at? If I had to hazard a guess, I'd say he's looking at his new team of X-Men ready for action (and hopefully in their classic costumes).
