10 Fascinating Deleted Scenes From Marvel Movies

Superhero movies are often fairly lengthy films, seeing as they sometimes have to tell detailed origin stories (sometimes of both the hero and villain) as well as serve up a sizeable amount of action and, more often than not, set up future films. As such, they usually leave a lot of extraneous scenes on the cutting room floor. Often these are just smaller character moments or confirmations of plot points that hurt the flow of the movie, but sometimes, the odd juicy moment can be lost thanks to an uncompromising editor. Here are just a few examples of fascinating deleted scenes – be they alternate takes, moments excised from the script or bits that didn’t make the final cut - from Marvel films. Some are just interesting to see, though we agree they shouldn’t have featured in the film, while others really should have been left in. Whatever the case may be, they're all fascinating in their own way. 10) Red In The Ledger – Captain America: The Winter Soldier The Marvel Cinematic Universe has so far been pretty good at understanding what fans want and giving it to them, but one of their big mistakes is never delivering a Black Widow solo movie. While this scene doesn’t divulge much, it does hint at some of the unexplored areas of Natasha’s past that we would love to see fleshed out in her own film. When Natasha is about to leak S.H.I.E.L.D. and HYDRA’s classified information to the internet, Alexander Pierce warns her that it will also bring her dirty little secrets into the open. In the movie, that’s all he says, but in this extended cut of the scene he mentions specific instances – including “Budapest,” “Osaka” and “The children’s war.” We've heard hints about what happened in Budapest before (it was a mission Natasha went on with Hawkeye), but what are those other two events? Unfortunately, we may never know… 9) Deadpool Goes Too Far - Deadpool What fans loved about the recent Deadpool film is that it was pretty fearless in preserving all the less-savoury aspects of the character from the comics, which earned the film its R-rating. One scene, however, was deemed to have gone “too far” and was left on the cutting room floor. Director Tim Miller explained: “There was a bar scene that was too vulgar for even the R-rated Deadpool. That bar scene was particularly mean and offensive to a lot of people… we just said, 'Oh my God, this is too far.' I mean there were so many people offended… we couldn't do it.” Well, colour us intrigued! Deadpool has already garnered a lot of criticism from some corners – the movie has been banned in China – for its levels of vulgarity and violence, so what could have been deemed too much? We can't help but be intrigued to see this scene, if it materializes sometime in the future… 8) Cap vs. Hawkeye – Captain America: The Winter Soldier Of all the Avengers, Hawkeye is easily the character with the least screentime, having so far only appeared in The Avengers, Age of Ultron plus a cameo in Thor. As such, it would have been great to see him in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, as was the plan before the scene was cut, due to conflicts with Jeremy Renner’s schedule. The idea was that Hawkeye and Cap would duke it out, once Steve is a fugitive from S.H.I.E.L.D., in what would surely have been a standout sequence of the film. Ultimately, it would be revealed that Hawkeye is only fighting Cap for appearances, and quietly slips him some info on S.H.I.E.L.D. Seeing as they are on the same team in the upcoming Civil War, this would have been a nice foreshadowing of the pair standing side by side, as well as setting up the idea of superheroes going against each other. 7) Wolverine Meets Spider-Man – Spider-Man Another superhero meet-and-greet that was never filmed, this one is even more tantalizing as it could have been the first comic book movie crossover – a decade before The Avengers. Back when Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man was being made, the rivalry between the different studios with superhero franchises had yet to develop, so Sony were happy to have Fox’s X-Men star Hugh Jackman turn up to meet Spidey in a fan-pleasing cameo. Reflecting on the notion in 2013, Jackman explained the reason why the scene never materialized: “The problem was, we couldn't find the suit. The suit was stuck in some thing. And so when they were in New York when I was there, we couldn't get it together.” The idea that such a cool-sounding scene was nixed by something as trivial as a mislaid costume is heartbreaking. Jackman’s Wolverine only wears a leather jumpsuit – couldn’t they quickly whip up another one? 6) Loki's Cameo – Avengers: Age of Ultron Tom Hiddleston’s Loki pretty much stole the show in The Avengers, which is no mean feat when the cast also includes the likes of Robert Downey Jr., Samuel L Jackson and an enormous green rage monster. It was a safe bet, then, that Loki would turn up in the sequel Age of Ultron. However, when the film released, the villain was nowhere to be seen, as his cameo appearance had been cut. He would have turned up in Thor’s dream sequence, apparently doing an impression of Odin (calling back to the end of Thor: The Dark World). Whedon revealed, however, that the dreams were “not an executive favourite” and a lot of those scenes were excised from the final product. Likewise, Thor’s visit to that cave with the mystical Pool of Exposition was also longer, with the Asgardian being possessed by mystical beings called the Norn. 5) Man Out Of Time – The Avengers The greatest triumph of The Avengers is probably how it balances its several franchise-leading characters, meaning each one gets a fair crack at the whip. In the initial cut of the film, though, things were a bit more Cap-heavy, as one long scene dealt with Steve Rogers adjusting to the modern world. It included Cap watching a documentary of his life, looking up Peggy Carter (finding out she has moved back to England, which sort of contradicts their meeting in Winter Soldier) and travelling alone on the subway. The most significant moment is where he visits a café and gets chatting with a waitress, the same one who we later see him saving at the film’s climax. The highlight of the scene, however, is surely Stan Lee’s original cameo in the film – as a random old guy who encourages Steve to ask the waitress out. 4) “The Other Guy Spit It Out” – The Incredible Hulk You’ll remember that in The Avengers, Bruce Banner reveals that he tried to commit suicide by putting a bullet in his mouth, but “the Other Guy spit it out.” This seems like a hint at an unseen dark point in the character’s past, but actually this is a reference to the abandoned opening to The Incredible Hulk where that exact thing happened. Back when he looked like Edward Norton instead of Mark Ruffalo (I suppose changing your form so much might realign your facial features?), Bruce does the deed while up in some snowy mountains. It can be presumed that it was decided that the opening was too dark for a family-orientated superhero film, so it was replaced. As an added bonus, in the avalanche that ensues, none other than Captain America can be glimpsed – in the bottom left of the screen (go on, have a really good look)! 3) Peter’s Dad Returns – The Amazing Spider-Man 2 The Amazing Spider-Man films may have crashed and burned, but they weren’t without their merits. Perhaps their boldest strand was the drawing out of the mystery of Peter’s parents. The second one went someway to explaining this but, thanks to the cancellation of the series, we will never get the full explanation. A huge spanner would have been thrown in the works of that storyline, however, if this shocking scene was left in the film. While Peter is mourning Gwen at her graveside, a dishevelled guy comes up to him and reveals himself as Richard Parker, his father back from the grave! Jeez, Peter was having a really emotionally-draining time of it that day… It’s probably a good thing this scene was left out, as it would have only meant we had more questions left unanswered. 2) Wolverine’s Costume – The Wolverine Hugh Jackman’s turn as Wolverine has made him the undeniable breakout star of the X-Men franchise, but fans do have one bone to pick with his character; he has never worn Wolverine’s iconic yellow suit from the comics. Never. In sixteen years. This alternate ending from The Wolverine, however, could have gone someway to fixing that problem. Here, Yukio gives Logan a mysterious briefcase with the classic costume inside, seemingly hinting that Logan would wear it in the next film. Director James Mangold has said that this was his attempt at addressing the huge call to see the suit in the movies. However, the scene was presumably cut because Wolverine doesn’t have it on in Days of Future Past. Hopefully, Mangold will reinstate the costume in the third Wolverine movie that he is set to direct, which will also be Hugh Jackman’s final appearance in the role. You have to let him wear it once, Fox, come on! 1) Quicksilver Survives – Avengers: Age of Ultron The death of Quicksilver in Avengers: Age of Ultron was something of a shock, which is exactly what Whedon was aiming for. He wanted to give the film a “war movie” feel where not everyone made it out alive. However, he nearly changed his mind and had the speedster recover from his seemingly fatal shooting – he actually shot a version of the line-up of the New Avengers at the end of the film which included Quicksilver. In the end, though, he decided that he shouldn’t pull an Agent Coulson, and left him dead. At an earlier stage, it was also Whedon’s intention to throw in a couple of other characters into that final scene that we haven’t met yet – including Captain Marvel and Spider-Man. Both have movies coming in the next couple of years, which Whedon wanted to set-up with their appearances here. However, Captain Marvel hadn’t been cast yet and the deal with Sony for Spider-Man was not quite finalized in time for the movie, so Whedon wasn't able to put it all together as he intended.
