10 Key Things We Learned From The Spider-Man: Far From Home Trailer

At last, the first trailer for Spider-Man: Far From Home was slung onto the web today, bringing us our long-awaited first look at the friendly neighborhood wall-crawler's second solo movie in the MCU. We last saw Tom Holland's Peter Parker turning to dust in Tony Stark's arms in Avengers: Infinity War, so fans were really anticipating this trailer for the assurance it'd bring that he'd end up alright in the end. While we know that Peter will be back on his feet, this being the life of Spider-Man, it's not going to be plain-sailing for him. In Far From Home, the high schooler goes on a vacation across Europe over the summer with his friends, but proves unable to escape his double identity when Nick Fury comes calling, looking for help in stopping some giant rampaging monstrosities. And then there's this mysterious guy in the fishbowl who looks like Donnie Darko... So, what more did this trailer tell us about Spider-Man: Far From Home? Well, watch it again in the player above and then read on for 10 key things we learned from the footage about this highly anticipated sequel. Spider-Man Makes Public Appearances Now The FFH trailer starts with Peter going about his regular duties as a friendly neighborhood Spider-Man. Back in Homecoming, that involved pretty low-key affairs such as helping old ladies across the street. He was becoming a known name around Queens, though, with the all the kids at Peter's high school watching YouTube videos of his antics. By the time of the sequel, it seems that his local fame has grown to the point that he's making public appearances. From what we can gather about this scene, May has organized a charity fundraiser and has got her nephew to show up in his superhero guise as the guest of honor. Peter isn't exactly at the place where he's getting keys to the city from the Chief of Police, like in Spider-Man 3, but this shows that he's becoming more celebrated as a hero. Somewhere out there, however, we suspect there's an angry newspaper editor who thinks he's more of a menace and a criminal. Hopefully, we'll meet him in the next movie. Aunt May Is Cool With Peter Being Spider-Man What this scene also tells us is that Aunt May is totally fine with Peter leading a double life. Homecoming put a twist on the usual Spidey story by having Marisa Tomei's character find out about her nephew's superhero'ing in the final scene of the movie. Infinity War didn't address what happened next, but the Far From Home trailer makes it clear that she supports him fully. And it's not just that she begrudgingly accepts that this is who he is, either. By the looks of things, May is actively encouraging Peter to be Spider-Man. We'd imagine that it was even her idea for him to appear at the charity event. Plus, in the international trailer - which has a few different scenes and is worth a watch - May packs the Spider-Man suit in Peter's case when he intends to leave it behind. Portraying May as the Alfred to Spidey's Batman seems to be the modern way of adapting the character, as Sony's Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse also cast May as the aid of the various alternate Spider-Men. May And Happy Are A Thing Now? There were lots of theories after Tony flirted with May in Captain America: Civil War that Iron Man might end up getting together with her and become Peter's new uncle. Seeing as Tony has since patched things up with Pepper, that's off the cards now and instead, it looks like May's seeing one of Stark's employees: Happy Hogan. The trailer shows Happy arriving late to the charity event with a large check, whereupon he trades awkward compliments with May in front of Peter, who senses that there's something going on between them with horror. Happy and May didn't share any screentime in Homecoming, but clearly they've got closer since then. Which suggests that it's still Happy's job to watch over Peter on Tony's orders. No doubt some fans will claim that this is another example of Marvel wiping away the memory of Uncle Ben, when May's actually had numerous other romances in the comics - she was married to J. Jonah Jameson's dad for a while, for instance. Speaking of Uncle Ben, though... The First Name Drop Of Uncle Ben In The MCU When Peter prepares to go on his European trip with his pals, we see him looking conflicted about whether he should pack his Spider-Man suit or not, ultimately deciding that he won't take it and he's just going to take some time off and be a normal kid for once. As we said before, though, the international trailer makes it clear that May packs the suit for him, cruelly denying him a much-needed vacation. Come on, May, let him rest! Arguably, though, the most important part of this scene is easy to miss. Take note of the inscription on Peter's suitcase when he closes it at the end of the clip: "B.F.P." We don't know what the "F" stands for, as he never had a middle name in the comics, but the other two initials make it clear that this suitcase once belonged to Ben Parker, Peter's uncle. Controversially, Ben's name has never been referenced in the past three MCU movies to feature Spider-Man, with it only obliquely mentioned in Homecoming that May's had a tough time recently. As such, this moment should go some way to placating those fans angered by his absence in the franchise so far. Peter And M.J. Sitting In A Tree... We all saw this one coming a mile away. From when Homecoming revealed at the last minute that Zendaya's character liked to be known as "M.J.," fans worked out that she was a revamped version of Mary Jane Watson, which must mean that there was a romance on the cards for them in the sequel. Sure enough, the trip to Europe seems to cause some feelings to brew up between the pair. In the trailer, Peter and M.J. have a moment where they call each other "pretty" and Peter confirms to Ned in private that he likes Michelle and thinks she likes him and his big wish for this vacation is that he gets to spend some time with her. Unfortunately, a certain former S.H.I.E.L.D. director's going to crush his plans on that front, but more on that in a moment. It's less obvious, but it also looks like Ned and Betty Brant have got together since we last saw them, too - something we worked out before from set pics. This is a nice nod to the comics as well, where the pair are also a couple. Nick Fury Is Spidey's Latest Mentor Just when Ned's waxing lyrical about the first time he fell in love, Nick Fury decides he's heard enough and knocks Peter's pal out with a tranquilizer. It seems the eyepatch-wearing super-spy has need of Spider-Man's special skills for a new threat facing the continent. Yup, Peter Parker's going to get himself a new mentor. Over the last three movies, he's very much been under the wing of Tony Stark, but Fury's apparently taking over his superhero education now. In the trailer, we see Spidey in a variety of suits - including a black-detailed version of his regular suit and a dark stealth suit. It's unclear whether these are Stark inventions like his previous costumes or gifts from Fury, though. We're also left to wonder exactly who Fury and Maria Hill - briefly glimpsed in the trailer - are working for, as S.H.I.E.L.D. was shut down back in The Winter Soldier. This question first arose during the Infinity War post-credits scene, so hopefully FFH will give us a definite answer to the conundrum. Spider-Man Is "All Alone" Yes, the big question fans have going into Far From Home is whether it's set prior to the cataclysmic events of Infinity War or before it. The most obvious answer is that it's set before, as Fury, Hill and Parker himself are all alive and not little piles of ash. However, it's also possible that it's set post-Avengers: Endgame, revealing that these heroes are somehow resurrected. For the biggest clue that FFH potentially is set after Endgame, pay attention to Happy's speech to Peter in the international trailer. "You're all alone," Hogan tells him. "Your friends are in trouble. What are you gonna do about it?" The first sentence raises the question of why Peter's all alone. With giant creatures (more on them in a moment) threatening Europe, surely this is a problem for the Avengers? Specifically, you'd think Iron Man would drop by as Happy could easily give him a call. But what if, by this point in the timeline, Iron Man isn't around anymore? The Elementals Look Like Sandman, Molten Man And Hydro-Man Previously leaked info about Far From Home told us to expect ginormous creatures called Elementals turning up around Europe. We get our first glimpse at them in the trailer and there appear to be three, one made of water, rock and lava. Though they seem to be marauding monsters, fans who know their stuff will likely feel their Spidey senses going off here. Yes, the three Elementals are very reminiscent of three long-running foes of Spider-Man's. The giant man made of rock and soil that Fury and Hill shoot at looks a lot like Sandman's final form in Spider-Man 3. The water guy, meanwhile, recalls Hydro-Man, a foe who had a prominent role in the 90s Spider-Man animated series. Finally, the lava one could be Molten Man AKA Mark Raxton. So, what's going on here? Are these Elementals just monsters, or are they the mutated criminals from the comics? It's worth remembering that Mysterio's a master of illusions, so maybe these creatures are just some of his villainous pals in disguise somehow. Flash Thompson Is Still A Fan Of Spider-Man This is actually the final thing the trailer tells us, but we're saving the most interesting talking point until last. When the kids are watching the footage of Mysterio on the news, Flash Thompson derides him as not being as cool as Spider-Man. M.J. pokes fun at Flash for his Spidey obsession, with the bully standing up for his hero - before insulting Peter. It's a classic set-up pulled from the comics. The irony of Flash is that he hates Peter Parker but idolizes Spider-Man, not knowing that they're really one and the same. Tony Revolori's version of the character is pretty different from the norm, but it seems this trait's still in tact. It's especially funny that he's a Spidey fan after the wall-crawler treated him so terribly in Homecoming - stealing and then smashing his car during the dance. Mysterio Is A Good Guy And He's Got His Fishbowl Helmet! We were all hoping the Far From Home trailer would give us a proper glimpse at Jake Gyllenhaal as Mysterio and thankfully, it didn't disappoint. Not only did it reveal the character in all his glory, but it also gave us much to chew on as to how the villain will be handled in the sequel. To begin with, yes, they've given him his helmet! This had already been confirmed via leaks, but it's great to see it in action. There'd been much chatter amongst fans that the distinctive fishbowl helmet would look ridiculous in live-action, but it's 100% comic-accurate and appears to be pretty awesome. Secondly, Mysterio doesn't make the entrance you'd expect, as he first shows up by helping Spidey out while fighting off the Elementals. "You don't want to be part of this," he tells Peter, before blasting "Hydro-Man" with green energy from his gauntlets. So, is Mysterio a good guy in the MCU? Eh, probably not. As we stated before, things likely aren't as they appear. Perhaps Gyllenhaal's Quentin Beck will take after Syndrome from The Incredibles and be a villain who wants to be the next big superhero, so he's faked some giant monsters for himself to fight. We'll find out the truth when Spider-Man: Far From Home swings into theaters on July 5th, 2019.
