Ever since Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse was released, there has been speculation that one of the scenes in this Spidey sequel was made by a 14-year-old kid. Now, we have clarity as to whether these rumors are true.
Preston Mutanga, also known on the internet as LEGO CGI creator LegoMe_TheOG, confirmed on Twitter that he is the one who animated the LEGO Spider-verse scene featured in the movie. The scene in question is when Spot discovers that he can enter various multiverses, and one of the first places he stumbles across is a Spider-Man universe made out of LEGO bricks.
This young animator thanked Across the Spider-Verse producers, Phil Lord, Christopher Miller, and Christina Steinberg for the opportunity to work on the film and that it was a “dream come true.”
LegoMe_TheOG is known on social media for its LEGO recreations of various movies and TV shows and recently recreated two Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse trailers using LEGO. According to the New York Times, these LEGO recreations caught the attention of Across the Spider-Verse producers who contacted the teenager if he wanted to animate a scene for the film. Christopher Miller said that Mutanga’s recreations have impressed not only the producers but also the animation team behind the film.
“We found out that it was a 14-year-old kid who made it and we were like, ‘This looks incredibly sophisticated for a nonadult, nonprofessional to have made.’ It blew us all away, including some of the best animators in the world.”
This is quite an impressive achievement for a 14-year-old. Hopefully, the minds behind The LEGO Movie or The LEGO Company will consider collaborating with Mutanga in the future.
