8 Burning Questions We Have After Watching Wonder Woman

In Wonder Woman, the DCEU finally has a movie that's universally adored as well as one that's raking in a massive amount of cash. One of the big strengths of the film is that it cuts out nearly all of the connections to the wider universe that often left us scratching our heads in the likes of Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice. By focusing on simply and effectively telling Diana of Themyscira's origins, it was able to be a much more satisfying film that told a complete story. However, that doesn't mean we didn't have any questions floating around our heads by the time the credits rolled. As with any movie, Wonder Woman has more than a few plot holes or elements that aren't fully explained - and we want answers. Of course, there are several things that have deliberately been left open ended and will probably be addressed in the sequel, but Patty Jenkins' film still raised its fair share of questions. Here, we've compiled 8 of the biggest. As always, if you have any of your own that we may have missed, be sure to share them in the comments section down below. 8) So Diana Works At The Louvre? Wonder Woman features a wraparound narrative which sees Diana narrating from the modern day. The beginning of the movie has her at the Louvre Museum in Paris, where her old pal Bruce Wayne sends her the original copy of the photograph of her, Steve Trevor and her friends from World War I. It's this that starts her remembering the past... As this all takes place in Diana's office at the Louvre, it heavily suggests she works there. This is an intriguing reveal which gives us a hint at what Diana does with her time when she's not superhero'ing. There's a comic book precedent for this, as well. For a period in the 1990s, Diana took a job as the curator of the Gateway City Museum of Antiquities. Just how long Diana has been working at the Louvre we don't know. Has she been there ever since the end of the war, passing herself off as her own descendants? Or has she moved through different careers over the past century? 7) Can Diana Return To Themyscira? After Steve arrives on Themyscira and tells the Amazons of the "war to end all wars" that's happening in the outside world, Diana makes the difficult decision to leave her island paradise home and journey to Man's World in order to kill Ares and save humanity. When she leaves, her mother Queen Hippolyta tearfully tells her that she "may never return." Sure enough, the movie never sees Diana come back. So, does this mean that Diana is exiled from the island or that she physically cannot return? Diana does break the laws of the Amazons by interfering with the outside world, so that could be grounds for Hippolyta to cast her daughter out. Alternatively, we know that Themyscira is shrouded from the outside. We could infer then, that Diana might not be able to find her way back again. Even if those German soldiers accidentally rowed in. Unfortunately, the comics don't offer up much help, either. Wonder Woman has been both exiled from her home and cut off from it physically in the source material. Let's hope that the sequel clears this matter up, then. 6) Will Steve Trevor Return? If Gal Gadot wasn't so damn perfectly cast as Diana, the star of the show would definitely be Chris Pine as Steve Trevor. The Star Trek actor gives one of his best performances as the roguish yet charming spy and his chemistry with Gadot makes them one of the best superhero movie couples we've had in a while. All this makes it even more heartbreaking when Steve dies at the film's climax. In a scene that's a little reminiscent of the end of Captain America: The First Avenger - which, funnily enough, also featured a heroic wartime Steve (played by a Chris) sacrificing himself in a plane - Steve heroically stops Ares' plan to hit London with Doctor Poison's gas bombs. He goes up in a big ball of flames and it seems pretty final for Wonder Woman's lover. But is this really the last we've seen of Steve Trevor? As Pine is such a bankable star and a huge asset to this movie, it would be a real loss if he didn't feature in Wonder Woman 2. In the Lynda Carter-starring Wonder Woman TV series, actor Lyle Waggoner played both the wartime Trevor and his son Steve Jr. Could the DCEU take a page out of that book and recast Pine as his own son then? Stranger things have happened. 5) Is Ares Really Dead? Throughout Wonder Woman, it's Diana's firm belief that humanity's pure-hearted and the true reason for the conflict is Ares, the God of War, who's corrupted mankind. While the truth is more complicated than that, Diana is proven right and Ares does exist. In the big climax, Wonder Woman and Ares - who it turns out is her half-brother - fight to the death. During the battle, Diana unlocks some of her demigoddess powers and defeats the God of War. Specifically, he's blown to smithereens by lightning. But, just like Steve Trevor, we're left wondering if Ares is actually dead. This a god who's apparently powerful enough to kill off the entire pantheon of Greek Gods, but is taken down by Diana alone. The rules of superhero movies tell us that Ares really is gone, so that Diana can find a new nemesis in the sequel (and rumours state that it will be her other archenemy in the comics, Cheetah). Still, who knows? The Wonder Woman movies could develop the theme that war is sadly a constant, therefore Ares is ultimately invincible. Likewise, how is Diana strong enough to defeat Ares when even Zeus fell to him? Obviously, she's fathered by Zeus to be the Godkiller, but what exactly makes her powerful enough? A possible answer is that it's not about her physical strength at all but her emotional strength. Zeus had a misguided faith in humanity's goodness and probably could not have killed his own son. Diana, on the other hand, is prepared to kill Ares and understands that his influence on humanity is only half the story. 4) What Are The Extent Of Diana's Powers? Speaking of Diana's defeat of Ares, the God of War's demise comes from the Amazon finally unleashing the full potential of her demigoddess powers. As Ares attacks her with his lightning, Diana raises above the ground as her bracelets suck up the lightning and then shoot it back at him, utterly destroying him. It's an amazing display of her abilities, but it does leave us wondering if Wonder Woman has yet unlocked the full extent of her powers. For instance, can she actually fly? The character traditionally can, but we only see Diana pull off the old 'leap tall buildings in a single bound' move in the film. That said, her floating ability does suggest we might see her soaring through the clouds with Supes in Justice League. Or will the movies limit that power so as not to step on the Man of Steel's toes? It should be interesting to see how much of her goddess potential Diana can unlock. She didn't seem all that more powerful in Batman V Superman than she is here, so perhaps the reveal of her true parentage won't make too much of a difference. If she wanted to, though, we have a sneaky feeling Diana could beat even Superman. 3) What Has Diana Been Doing For The Past Century? When we first met Diana Prince in Batman V Superman, it seemed that she'd been retired from active superhero duty for a while. Specifically, since her role in World War I, as discovered by Lex Luthor and later Bruce Wayne. In Wonder Woman, we finally find out the explanation for why she's taken a step back into the shadows. Although she's defeated Ares, Diana's lost Steve Trevor and now understands that humanity is capable of darkness on their own. No doubt with the many wars that happened through the 20th century, her faith in humanity wavered somewhat. But has Diana actually been operating as Wonder Woman (a name you might notice that she never goes by in the movie) over this time? It's possible. At the end of the film, the way that the scene sees her suiting up and jumping into action suggests that she's leading the classic double life of a superhero. But if that's the case, then why does the world at large not know who she is? Diana must have been defending mankind in a much lower key way than she did back in World War I. However, the more jaded, retired hero introduced in BvS doesn't quite gel with the hopeful hero of Wonder Woman, so perhaps there's another dark day for her to come in a future film. 2) What Was That "BOOM" At The End Of The Movie? As we just said, the final moments of Wonder Woman see Diana at the Louvre, sending a quick email to Bruce to thank him for "bringing him back to me," meaning the photo of Steve Trevor. Suddenly, there's the sound of a low 'BOOM' and Diana springs into action, suits up and leaps into the skies above Paris. So, what exactly is the situation which needs Diana's help? It's totally possible that this is of no importance and the explosion is just something to get her back in the Wonder Woman costume to make for an awesome final shot. On the other hand, is this actually a cheeky connection with Justice League? We know that the movie will feature an alien invasion of Earth from Darkseid's Parademons. Does this boom signal their arrival on our planet? In the comics, the forces of Apokolips travel to Earth via Boom Tubes, devices which create interspacial portals. It could easily be one of these opening somewhere in Paris that Diana hears. Or we might be clutching at straws and seeing connections when there are none. You decide. 1) When Will Wonder Woman 2 Take Place? Wonder Woman uses its period setting brilliantly, as it's integral to the story and brings out a lot of interesting and timely themes of peace and war. Now that we've had Diana's origin story filled in, however, the big question we're wondering after watching the movie is whether the sequel - which is definitely on its way, after the massive success of this one - will jump forward in time or not. If DC want to take another page out of Marvel's book, they could move Diana to the present day, as was done with Captain America in The Winter Soldier. Seeing as the movie would appear after Justice League, this would make a lot of sense. However, if you ask us, we'd like to see them do something different and keep the Wonder Woman films as prequels to the rest of the DCEU. What did Diana do during World War II, for example? There's surely a great story to be told there. As it stands, director Patty Jenkins - who will thankfully return for the sequel - has not yet made up her mind about what time period to set the movie in. Here's what she had to say about it: "I know I’ve got to take her from the end of World War I to someplace. But whether it’s something in between — something in the time between that and BvS, I just don’t know. Or maybe it’s something after Justice League. I just don’t know.” What we do know about Wonder Woman 2 is that it will definitely take Diana to America, it will likely feature her iconic Invisible Jet and could see Cheetah as the main villain. Whatever setting Jenkins eventually goes with, let's just hope she can create a sequel that lives up to the heights of the first one.
