2) Jessica Jones
On paper, Marvel’s choice to adapt a lesser-known hero like Jessica Jones to the screen was an odd one. Once we saw Krysten Ritter as the brilliantly unique private investigator, though, we realized that it was a terrific move.
The great thing about Jessica is how messed up she is. Often, female heroes have to be a little bit more well-behaved and wholesome than their male counterparts, but Ms. Jones is a fully-fledged anti-hero. An acerbic-tongued, anti-social alcoholic, Jessica might be on the side of the angels but that doesn’t mean she has to act like one. She also has a truckload of trauma, after being raped and forced to kill by Kilgrave.
Make no mistake about it, Jessica Jones is no normal superhero.
1) Peggy Carter
As great as Jessica and Black Widow and the others we’ve mentioned are, our choice for Marvel’s greatest female character is Agent Peggy Carter. It’s pretty much a fact – she was the first woman to get her own vehicle in the MCU, after all.
As played by Hayley Atwell, Peggy was already a brilliantly tough character in Captain America: The First Avenger, but we got to know her even better in her own TV show, Agent Carter. The first season, in particular, showed her at her best – as she saved 1940s New York from some Russian fiends and successfully fought against sexism in the workplace.
After a bunch of cameos in the movies, the character was finally killed off in Captain America: Civil War. With that and the heartbreaking cancellation of Agent Carter, it looks like we have seen the last of Peggy Carter. But at least it was fun while it lasted.
