8 Minor Characters From Star Wars: The Force Awakens With Insane Origin Stories

When watching a Star Wars film, we get the sense that every seemingly insignificant cantina patron or X-Wing pilot is carrying with them untold stories, and that’s exactly what makes the franchise’s universe so rich. It’s also why the Expanded Universe is appealing to passionate fans; we get to learn more about ridiculously minor elements of the movies that are only tangentially connected to the main characters. For example, a random dude running by during the Cloud City escape in The Empire Strikes Back receives a full name (Willrow Hood), an elaborate personal history and plenty of devotees at every convention.

Bazine

Bazine Netal has an even more extensive background than Grummgar, and a short story dedicated to her was released before The Force Awakens even hit theatres. As it reveals, Bazine grew up as an orphan on Chaaktil  was eventually trained at Delphi Kloda’s combat school. Delphi Kloda, by the way, was once a member of Kanjiklub and the right-hand man of Tasu Leech. Everyone in the Star Wars galaxy is connected in some way, six degrees of Kevin Bacon style.

Kloda’s school taught combat openly but espionage in secret, and it was here that Bazine became something of a master of disguise: she’s able to hide her fingerprints, cover her lips with poison and even emulate other species. Kloda hoped to train Bazine into being the perfect weapon, hence the title of the short story, and he even went as far as to kill anyone she grew attached to so that they couldn’t interfere with his plans.

One day, years after Bazine went off on her own to work as a mercenary, Kloda betrayed his former student and left her to die inside a wax cell full of wasp-like creatures. She was able to escape, though, and took her revenge on Kloda by brutally strangling him.

Despite her minor role in The Force Awakens, she’s one of the most visually-distinct human characters in the movie, and one who will almost certainly inspire lots of cosplayers at future Comic-Cons. Plus, seeing as she’s the one who calls the First Order and leads to the capture of Rey, she has a palpable impact on the plot despite the minimal screen time.
