Did you hear the one about the Netflix original produced in the Netherlands that shares a name with a delicious baked good of Italian origin that became one of the platform’s most-watched movies? Well, you’re about to, because Stromboli has taken a huge bite out of the streaming service’s global charts.
As per FlixPatrol, the character-driven story that mirrors the moniker of a baked turnover typically stuffed with various cheeses, cold cuts, and/or vegetables that legend has it originated from the remote Italian region of Philadelphia has become one of Netflix’s Top 10 titles in 44 countries spread out across the world.
Of course, there is also an island named Stromboli, which is where the connection comes in. Elise Schaap’s recently-divorced mother sets sail for the active volcanic outpost to attend a self-help retreat that allows her to try and deal with the fractured relationship she’s got with her daughter, with plenty of room for self-discovery – and possibly even a dash of romance – along the way.
Much like the aforementioned pastry, the only way to escape from Stromboli (the island and the film) is to ensure that every last morsel is examined, digested, and ultimately reflected upon. Besides probably making people hungry, the film might even inspire a few subscribers to look inward and confront their own problems head-on.
Either that, or they’re going to have an unquenchable hankering for the meatiest and cheesiest stromboli they can possibly hope to find, so perhaps the quaint drama can drive up an increase in sales give its position on Netflix’s charts.
