Avengers: Infinity War Directors Always Knew Which Characters Were Doomed

Turns out directors Joe and Anthony Russo always knew which characters would be dusted at the tail-end of Avengers: Infinity War.

Perhaps more so than any other MCU movie before it, Avengers: Infinity War considerably raised the stakes – so much so, in fact, that no one character was safe from Thanos’ wrath.

It’s part of the reason why Joe and Anthony Russo’s event movie generated so much intrigue earlier this year, as audiences were left in the dark right up until the 11th hour. The same strategy is clearly being applied to Avengers 4, too, given Marvel Studios has already sent the Internet into a collective tailspin over the imminent (?) trailer reveal.

When it comes to Infinity War, though, it turns out the Russo Brothers always knew which characters were doomed from the outset, as they began drafting up a list of heroes who would, in time, be dusted by the Mad Titan’s snap.

This revelation came as part of Collider’s exclusive screening of Avengers: Infinity War (h/t /Film), followed by a Q&A session with the creators. Indeed, having quizzed screenwriters Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely about nearly every aspect of the MCU mash-up, it was time for Collider to turn their attention to the Russo Brothers, beginning with the film’s kill count.

Not that that’s very surprising, as Joe and Anthony Russo, along with screenwriters Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, likely spent months carefully planning every aspect of Avengers: Infinity War, resulting in the $2 billion success story we know and love. While imperfect, the MCU’s biggest ever movie is still an incredible feat of filmmaking in that it brings together so many disparate Marvel characters – and precisely zero Netflix heroes – for a cinematic event the likes of which we’ve never seen before.

Up next? Avengers 4. No pressure, then…
