Avengers: Infinity War Directors Say Ebony Maw’s An Early Fan Favorite

According to Avengers: Infinity War directors Joe and Anthony Russ, Ebony Maw's turning out to be an early fan favorite in the film.

What’s the one thing that Corvus Glaive, Proxima Midnight, Cull Obsidian and Ebony Maw all have in common? Aside from their galactic origins and desire for absolute rule, of course. Thanos!

Yes, Marvel’s Mad Titan is the unruly oppressor who assembles the Black Order in time for Avengers: Infinity War, thereby placing Earth’s Mightiest Heroes on red alert.

Thanks to Infinity War‘s tantalizing teasers, we’ve already glimpsed most of them in action, and they certainly seem like a menacing bunch, one that can no doubt give the Avengers a run for their money. But when it comes to Ebony Maw in particular, who we know will be torturing Doctor Strange for a bit of the film, apparently we should expect a new fan favorite.

Speaking to press this week ahead of Infinity War‘s release, Joe and Anthony Russo touched on the character a bit and revealed that he’s “really popping” with audiences who’ve seen the movie already.

“We’re trying to find the personality of those characters, the Black Order,” Joe said. “We were looking for people to bring personality to these characters and he [Tom Vaughan-Lawlor] just brought this interesting, complex character that’s really popping with people that have seen the movie so far.”

Anthony chimed in as well, adding:

“And like Josh Brolin with Thanos, Tom is playing a character that is largely created digitally with graphics, and animated, but it is based very specifically on his performance.”

As Thanos’ minions, some fear that the Black Order will simply be used as cannon fodder and nothing more when the lights go down in theaters later this month. Be that as it may, these comments from the Russos indicate that they’ve at least made a conscious effort to flesh out their roster of baddies and we can’t wait to see how Thanos’ adopted children factor into things.

How much screentime has been reserved for Ebony Maw specifically is still up for question, of course – ditto for the character’s potential involvement in Avengers 4 – but hearing that he’s an early fan favorite has definitely piqued our curiosity and we’ll finally get to meet him for ourselves when Avengers: Infinity War crashes into theaters on April 27th.
