Batman V Superman And Beyond: What To Expect From The DCEU

If there is a single, universal truth, it is surely that everything is connected. Nothing happens in a vacuum. Just as our own daily lives intersect and impact upon each other, so does artistic output – and when it comes to the fledgling DC Extended Universe, artistic output is key. Comic books have long been appreciated as the very specific art form that they are, but when the art of comic books is married with the art of filmmaking, something truly magical is born. While we have been enjoying that marriage between Marvel comic books and Marvel Studios for almost a decade now, it is the DC cinematic adaptations that are currently getting fans hot under the collar.

It was recently reported that it would not be until Justice League: Part Two that we would see the inclusion of Green Lantern – known to be the seventh member of the modern incarnation of the team. That’s an interesting statement, because it further supports the Darkseid theory. If the DCEU is designed as one, long narrative arc – dispensing with origin stories, and gaining momentum as it goes – then Justice League: Part Two is a huge plot point.

Going right back to the near-beginning, if Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice contains signs of Darkseid’s approach, the Justice League begin to fight that threat in Part One, and Black Adam reveals his links with the tyrant in Shazam, then Justice League: Part Two is where the problem gets very real indeed – and that would certainly be where Green Lantern comes in.

Darkseid, as introduced in DC comic books, is one of the most powerful beings in creation. Ruling his own planet, Apokolips, his ambition is to conquer the entire universe, erasing all free will as he goes. He is, in effect, a modern depiction of Hitler’s Nazism, who can also shoot catastrophic ‘Omega beams’ from his eyes. He uses these beams to destroy, and also to earmark new societies for attack – as seen briefly in the trailer for Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice. It is this inter-galactic aspect of this Justice League story that will likely pave the way for Green Lantern – effectively a human member of an inter-planetary police force.
