Ben Foster and Giovanni Ribisi are the two newest actors to join the upcoming film Contraband. Already starring Mark Wahlberg and Kate Beckinsale, the film is an American remake of the movie Reykjavik-Rotterdam, which came out of Iceland back in 2008 and was very well reviewed.
Baltasar Kormákur, who starred in, co-wrote and produced the original, will take the director’s chair here. The official plot synopsis is as follows:
Like a fish on a dry land, Kristofer is stuck in a dull everyday routine, working as a security guard. He got fired from the freight ship he worked on, when he was caught smuggling alcohol. Faced with money problems, he is tempted to accept the help of his friend, Steingrimur, who manages to pull some strings to get his old job back. He decides to take his chances one last time on a tour to Rotterdam
Having not seen the original, I can’t comment too much here. The cast is shaping up nicely, but by the sounds of the plot synopsis, I’m not exactly sold, at least not yet. The original did well but I’m just not that interested in this one, yet.
Foster and Wahlberg are both great actors but I could care less for Ribisi and Beckinsale. I think Wahlberg and Foster could be strong enough to carry the film but until I see some footage from this one, I’m on the fence.
