Brie Larson Captain Marvel

Captain Marvel’s Working Title Revealed?

Production Weekly is reporting that Captain Marvel is operating under the working title Open World ahead of its release in 2019.

Not to be outdone by Wonder Woman 2, which is reportedly set to enter production under the working title “magic hour,” we’re now learning that Captain Marvel has settled on a working title of its own.

According to the folks over at Production Weekly (h/t ComicBook.com), the Brie Larson-fronted spinoff will be known as “open world,” which is somewhat different to the “warbird” title that began circulating online last summer.

And this being a Marvel film, fans are already beginning to speculate as to what “open world” could mean. If nothing else, it’s an exciting reminder of Captain Marvel‘s cosmic scope, given the Carol Danvers origin story is rooted in the 1990s – and therefore far from the events of Infinity War and Avengers 4.

That’ll undoubtedly lend Ryan Fleck and Anna Boden some breathing room to craft a character-driven spinoff, lest Captain Marvel be encumbered by the daunting continuity of Marvel’s cinematic universe. Perhaps it’ll journey into the Quantum Realm a la Ant-Man and the Wasp? Who knows, but for now, fans can continue to look forward to Infinity War, safe in the knowledge that Carol Danvers’ solo outing is falling into place.

Brie Larson’s MCU newbie will finally – finally! – take flight on March 8th, 2019. Of course, that’s assuming that the great and powerful Captain Marvel doesn’t appear in Avengers: Infinity War when it hits theaters in May.

It’s certainly a strategy that worked for Black Panther – remember, T’Challa made his MCU debut via Civil War before circling back to headline his own standalone movie – though Marvel is yet to divulge any firm plans. As a result, the speculation will likely continue to fester long up until May 4th.
