If it wasn’t for the fact they co-starred in a blockbuster Marvel Cinematic Universe franchise, you get the impression that Chris Pratt and Dave Bautista wouldn’t have ended up as longtime friends. That’s the beauty of Guardians of the Galaxy, though, with the offscreen camaraderie imitating the dysfunctional found family’s chemistry to a tee.
Pratt has a background in comedy and ended up losing 60 pounds to secure the role of Star-Lord in the first place, before going on to weaponize his signature screen persona in a succession of box office smash hits where he plays the same basic archetype over and over again, while his deep-rooted religious views have also caused some controversy on occasion.
Meanwhile, Bautista was a hulking professional wrestler that sought to branch out into acting, and now finds himself determined to tackle as many different roles as possible, gathering plenty of notoriety for his outspoken views. With that in mind, it won’t be a shock to discover their reactions to Gunn being fired by Marvel from Vol. 3 couldn’t have been more different.
As revealed to The Hollywood Reporter, Pratt was quick to text Gunn with verses from the Bible to keep his spirits up, with “Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance” proving to be a favorite.
Meanwhile, Bautista came out swinging and simply declared Disney to be fascists on social media, which led Gunn to reminisce on their markedly different ways of handling the situation.
“Dave and Chris are so different in their approaches. Chris is like, ‘How do we do this methodically and take it one step at a time?’ Dave is like, ‘F*ck you.’ “
It all worked out in the end, though, with the band back together and all singing from the same hymn sheet (pun very much intended), with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 releasing next week.
