My Spy, a film everyone forgot soon after it was released, will be getting a sequel after Dave Bautista pushed tirelessly for the film to be made.
Cast your mind back to the time before COVID-19 caused a worldwide lockdown and you may remember some of the films in theaters and on streaming services. But, like most, you probably won’t remember My Spy starring Dave Bautista as a CIA operative spying on a single mother and her daughter, Chloe Coleman. That’s because the action-comedy didn’t do very well, critically or commercially, receiving a rotten rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
Yet, despite that, we’ll be seeing JJ and Sophie return to the big screen sometime next year. It’s safe to say we’re surprised by this given the trajectory of Bautista’s career so far, as well as statements the man himself has given about his future aspirations. But he does seem excited to return to the role.
Despite the film not doing too well, it seems that the stars had a great time filming it. In an interview discussing the upcoming M. Night Shyamalan movie, Knock At the Cabin, with Collider, Bautista claims that he really enjoyed filming the first one and so pushed for a sequel.

The actor has made a name for himself recently with major roles in Rian Johnson’s Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, as well as Blockbusters such as Dune. The former WWE star has focused on being taken seriously with his career, he’s even taken shots at fellow wrestler turned Hollywood star, Dwayne Johnson, whom he’s heavily implied isn’t a serious actor. So it seems odd to some that the actor should campaign for a sequel to a movie such as this when his primary focus seems to be on more serious roles.
Despite the performance of the first My Spy, it’s actually not a bad movie, in fact, it’s quite far from being a bad movie, so if Bautista enjoyed making it then we’re glad that he’s getting the chance to dive back into the role. It’s great to see actors enjoying themselves rather than tying themselves down to roles that they hate. Daniel Craig escaped the James Bond role and seems to be having the time of his life playing Benoit Blanc, so maybe Bautista is taking a leaf out of his book.
There currently is no release date for the sequel to My Spy but it’s likely we’ll hear more about it later this year. Here’s to hoping that it does better than its predecessor.
