Just take this new photo courtesy of DC Family, which shows Henry Cavill in the familiar Superman suit, alongside Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman and Ben Affleck’s Batman. Though the context of the image is unclear, it’s strange to think that the 2017 box office bomb will be the last time we see of the DC trinity together, at least in their current incarnations.

Since the release of Justice League, the three pictured heroes and the actors who play them have taken drastically different paths in the DCEU. The smoothest journey has undoubtedly been that of Wonder Woman, with Gadot set to reprise her role in the upcoming Wonder Woman 1984, which is now thought to be the second installment in a trilogy for the character.

Ben Affleck, meanwhile, has stepped down from the role of the Caped Crusader, though he’s still serving as producer on Matt Reeves’ The Batman, which is said to be casting a younger actor to fill his place. As for Cavill, the star’s future in the franchise still feels mysterious, with a recent report alleging that while both he and Warner Bros. are keen to make more Superman movies, the star first has a few conditions which he’d like met, including a pay raise and a producer credit.

From the look of things, it could be many years before another Justice League film graces our screens, and even then, you can pretty much guarantee that it won’t be the same cast. Nonetheless, after the success of Aquaman, the DCEU looks to have plenty of future left in it, and we’ll find out what’s next for the comic book universe when Shazam! hits theaters on April 5th, 2019.
