James Gunn’s sparkling new DCU seems to have an appetite for Elseworlds, the DC Universe’s long-time term for stories that take place outside the core canon. The Batman and Joker franchises have officially been rebranded, and will exist apart from the stories told in movies like The Flash, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, and so on.
This means that DC creatives have a wide canvas to work with, with one of the most prominent announcements an upcoming adaptation of Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow that shows a very different take on Kara Zor-El. So, if Supergirl can get this treatment, why not Wonder Woman?
Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman 3 doesn’t seem to be a priority right now, though perhaps a movie based on this killer concept image created for the original might be a perfect adventure for her:
This was essentially the original Wonder Woman pitch that Zack Snyder was working on, showing a 19th-century Diana forming a team of the world’s top warriors in order to take down Ares. The concept was soon ditched in favor of a World War I setting, but could there still be something here?
And who’d be a better director than Snyder himself? After all, he was heavily involved with the excellent first Wonder Woman and didn’t have anything to do with the terrible Wonder Woman 1984, so why not try and recapture that magic?
Now we’re getting into the realm of pipe dreams, as Snyder is happily working on his own new sci-fi property in Netflix epic Rebel Moon, while Gunn seems determined to leave his DCEU in the past. But, yes, we want to see this too:
Right now, Gadot’s DCU future is uncertain. It appears she shot some kind of cameo for The Flash, though reports are that her performance (and Henry Cavill’s) has been cut from the movie. We doubt she’s said goodbye to the role for good, but as it stands the chances of her getting another solo movie anytime soon seem slim.
If they were going to do it, though, this Elseworlds concept would be a very fun watch.
