Warning: this article contains massive spoilers for Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is the sequel to the highly-acclaimed and Oscar-winning film, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. It was reported that this film will have around 240+ characters, with most of them being a bunch of Spider-Man variants from different universes. This Spidey-Sequel will test Miles as he learns about a secret society filled with different Spider-Man variants, as well as redefine what it takes to be Spider-Man.
Aside from the new characters and villains that will be in introduced, some familiar faces will be making their grand return in this Sony sequel. With Miles Morales being the most obvious once, and all of his multiverse-hoppping friends, here are all the characters who will be returning in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.
Before we go on, it’s worth mentioning one last time that there are spoilers inbound, as we’re going to be discussing how these character reappear in the film. Proceed with caution, or better yet, head on out and see the film for yourself.
Miles Morales and his family
It’s no secret that the entire Morales family will be returning. By this point, he still hasn’t told his parents his Spidey-secret. In the sequel, it was seen that both Miles (in his Spider-Man get-up) and his father, Jefferson Davis sometimes have conversations. While they don’t get along, he knows that this friendly-neighborhood superhero is trying to help. At the same time, Jefferson is able to confide in Spider-Man, since he sees him as an unbiased person he could talk to (whilst not knowing that he’s talking to his son). Meanwhile, Rio (Miles’ mother) doesn’t want to see her son grow up, but she understands that Miles has plans beyond Brooklyn.
Aunt May
While Aunt May had an integral supporting role in the first movie, she only received a few minutes of screen time in the sequel. It makes sense since Miles no longer need to lean on her and she has accepted that he’s taking over her nephew’s role as Spider-Man. The sequel showed Aunt May moving on, possibly moving somewhere else since a moving truck was seen outside her house.
Spider-Woman
In this Spider-Man sequel, Gwen Stacy (aka Spider-Woman) takes the lead as she starts off this new movie. We learn more about her backstory, what happened post-Into the Spider-Verse, and how she ended up joining Miguel O’Hara’s group. Throughout the film, Gwen reveals that she misses Miles since they parted ways at the end of the first film and was glad to see him again. However, she does have a sad reason why she was unable to see her best friend for a while.
Peter B. Parker
Speaking of old friends, another character making their grand return in Across the Spider-Verse is Peter B. Parker. In the sequel, it is revealed that Miles’ mentor and friend got back together with Mary Jane and had a child together named Mayday, whom he takes to work with him, despite how dangerous it is. Just like Gwen, he too was invited to join Miguel O’Hara’s team to travel the multiverse multiverse and resolve timeline anomalies.
Penny Parker
While Peni doesn’t get a lot of screen time in the sequel, she too is part of Miguel O’Hara’s team. During one of the scenes in Across the Spider-Verse, Miles learns about the “canon events” that almost every Spider-Man has to go through. Aside from the death of a loved one, there is also a death of a police captain that’s close to each and every Spider-Man. As Miles tries to convince Miguel that he could be different, Peni appears along with every other Spider-person and tries to calm Miles down, telling him that this is the truth of their story.
Uncle Aaron
One of the big plot twists that occurred in Across the Spider-Verse was around the final scenes of the film. Miles thought he returned home when instead he arrived in a universe that was similar to his but without a Spider-Man in sight. This means that Uncle Aaron is still alive, living a life of crime. Except in this universe, he’s no longer the Prowler, or perhaps the baton was passed down to someone else, and he’s sticking around to assist.
Uncle Aaron also appears earlier in the film, but through his live-action appearance played by Donald Glover. It’s currently unknown if this version of Aaron Davis/The Prowler is the same guy from Spider-Man: Homecoming in the MCU or in a Miles Morales live-action adaptation.
Spider-Man Noir & Spider-Ham
Across the Spider-Verse starts with Gwen being unable to make connections with her bandmates since she can’t tell them that she’s Spider-Woman. Fortunately, she was able to make a band of her own by the end of the film, only this time, it consists of all the Spider-people she knows and trusts. Joining her (aside from Peter, Peni, Pavitr Prabhakar (aka Indian Spider-Man), and Spider-Punk), are Spider-Ham and Spider-Man Noir from Into the Spider-Verse. Together, they’re going to help Gwen find Miles and bring him home.
