Obviously, meaty spoilers for Fast X will follow from here on out.
Now that Fast X is finally playing in theaters, longtime fans of the franchise will no doubt be pulling their jaws up off the floor, and not just because Dominic Toretto and the family have endured another insanely over the top bout of world-saving shenanigans.
Continuing to exist as a superhero series in disguise, the 10th mainline installment in The Fast Saga contains a pair of post-credits scenes that feature the returns of two of the property’s highest-profile stars. In keeping with continuity, one of them makes absolutely no sense and requires the latest far-fetched retcon to explain, while the other was something we thought we’d never see.
Dwayne Johnson couldn’t have made it much clearer that he was done playing Luke Hobbs in any project that involved Vin Diesel as part of the cast, but apparently his word means nothing after the bald-headed behemoths unequivocally drew a line under their infamous feud when The Rock agreed to make his cameo.
It was something we never imagined would happen based on Johnson’s harsh words on his chrome-domed counterpart, but Fast X director Louis Leterrier made it sound completely straightforward while explaining to The Hollywood Reporter how he brokered the peace treaty.
“The peace treaty … I kind of [brokered it]. We all did. Ultimately, the movie did. We sort of looked at each other from across the room and winked a few months back, saying, ‘We should work together.’ And then I had this idea and I presented it to the producers and the studio. And then we reached out to Dwayne and his team, and said, ‘Just come and watch the movie. You have to love the movie first.’ So he came to see the movie and really loved it, and then we started talking. It was very smooth, and frankly, as a fan, I could not conceive continuing the franchise without either Dwayne or Gal Gadot.”
It doesn’t do anything to dampen the theories Johnson is concerned about his star power being on the wane in the face of several high-profile setbacks in quick succession, but it does at least ensure the second (or maybe even third) part of Fast X will literally get the entire band back together for the final ride.
