Rick Grimes The Walking Dead

First Trailer For The Walking Dead Movie Teases Rick’s Return

The very first teaser trailer for The Walking Dead movie has arrived from San Diego Comic-Con, and it teases the return of Rick Grimes.

True to the old saying, just as one door closes for Rick Grimes, another one now opens. And this time, it’ll mark the start of what’s said to be a much “bigger story.” At least, that’s according to Andrew Lincoln.

The former Walking Dead star spoke to Yvette Nicole Brown last year during a Talking Dead special (h/t ComicBook.com), and teased what’s in store for us in regards to AMC’s planned movie trilogy, which will revolve around the fan favorite character and also explore the wider Walking Dead universe, now that Rick’s been airlifted away from the group and thrust into a whole new and potentially more dangerous situation.

“I like the idea that we get to tell a bigger story, maybe with a sort of wider vista,” Lincoln said. “And I’ve always been interested in what’s going on out there, you know, whether or not there is contact with the wider world. I want to know the meta of it all. And I suppose to be able to kind of touch upon that in a contained story for me is a very exciting proposition.”

And while details on this new chapter in his tale haven’t been revealed just yet, AMC have now released the very first promo for the film, which can be seen above. Given that it’s so early on in the development process, there’s no footage on display here, but at the very least, it confirms that the project’s still happening and reminds us that yes, Rick will return. And when he does, it’ll be on the big screen, not on television.

Between this and the first trailer for season 10 of The Walking Dead, Comic-Con certainly delivered the goods today, but it’s still a shame that Lincoln won’t be returning to the show. After all, it was a major blow for the series and one need only look at the soft ratings following his exit for evidence of that.

Still, AMC has no intentions of taking the foot off the pedal and it seems they remain fully confident that TWD will continue to have a long life on the small screen. We’ll have to wait and see if that indeed turns out to be the case, but for now, The Walking Dead fans can at least rest easy knowing that Rick Grimes will return, and probably sooner rather than later. A 2020 release for the first movie in the trilogy looks likely, but as soon as we have a firm date, we’ll be sure to let you know.
