Poor Henry Cavill hasn’t been having the best of luck recently, and only some of it is down to the embarrassing comedown that saw him very publicly retract his comments about returning as the DCU’s Superman.
While Dwayne Johnson should shoulder his fair share of the blame after going all-out to hype Cavill’s return – only for both of them to be tossed out on their asses by James Gunn and Peter Safran – it was less than encouraging to discover that an alarming volume of people completely forgot that he had blockbuster espionage actioner Argylle on the way.
There’s also the small matter of his exit from The Witcher effectively torpedoing the show’s popularity among the fandom, and now one of his hottest upcoming projects has been sent straight to streaming in a multitude of international markets. Per Deadline, Guy Ritchie’s The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare will hit theaters, but only in the United States.
Lionsgate has scooped up the domestic rights, but Prime Video has acquired the project and will roll it out across Europe, Latin America, ANZ, Canada, South Africa, India and pan-Asian PayTV. That’s definitely a disappointment considering Ritchie’s pedigree as a director, never mind a star-studded cast that sees Cavill backed by Eiza González, Alan Ritchson, Henry Golding, Alex Pettyfer, Cary Elwes, Til Schweiger, and more.
With the Highlander reboot remaining up in the air, it’s beginning to look as though streaming will become Cavill’s sanctuary given that he’s still part of the Enola Holmes franchise, while he’s shaping an entire Warhammer universe for Amazon.
