Adding a somewhat novel twist to the standard road movie, Helen Mirren and Donald Sutherland have been tapped to headline The Leisure Seeker, a heartfelt drama about a retired couple plotting course for an adventure.
That’s despite doctor’s orders, too, with The Hollywood Reporter revealing that the starry vehicle is aligned as “Easy Rider meets The Notebook,” with Mirren and Sutherland set to portray a couple of 70-somethings defying the odds to enjoy what is surely one of their final journeys together.
Their destination? AÂ Winnebago Leisure Seeker, far away from a flock of grown-up children, worrying doctors and really, the general hustle and bustle of modern life. It’s here that Mirren and Sutherland’s budding chemistry will be put to the sword, of course, but we’re quietly confident the pair can nail a mix of gleeful joy and poignant melancholy.
Lifted from Michael Zadoorian’s novel of the same name, The Leisure Seeker is currently doing the rounds at Cannes, and with two bona fide stars now attached, don’t be too surprised if and when the road flick gets snapped up over the course of the week. Paulo Virzi, Italian filmmaker behind Like Crazy, is helming the feature, which will likely occupy an early 2017 release.
