The first full length trailer for the hotly anticipated teen-centric action thriller The Hunger Games has gone online. Based on the novels by Suzanne Collins, the film stars Oscar nominee Jennifer Lawrence as Katniss Everdeen and Josh Hutcherson as Peeta Mellark.

I can’t speak as to whether the film will closely follow the novel (as I haven’t read it), but what’s shown here does look rather promising. While it still plays very much as a tease, we can gain a few insights.

For one, the film looks like it will have no trouble achieving similar success to the Twilight films. I think all the right elements are there and even for those that haven’t read the novels, I think the film will catch on very quickly with the targeted demographic.

The trailer gives us enough of a hook to pull in the uninitiated but still conceals enough to keep us curious, which I like. It hints at some emotional/dramatic scenes and the futuristic dystopia looks very nicely crafted. We also get a brief glimpse of the games themselves at the very end, which might just be the biggest tease of all.

Overall, a very impressive trailer and I can’t wait to see more. It looks like everything is coming together really nicely here and I think Lionsgate may have a massive franchise on their hands.

The Hunger Games also stars Woody Harrelson, Liam Hemsworth, Lenny Kravitz and Donald Sutherland and will be released on March 23rd, 2012.

Every year in the ruins of what was once North America, the nation of Panem forces each of its twelve districts to send a teenage boy and girl to compete in the Hunger Games.  Part twisted entertainment, part government intimidation tactic, the Hunger Games are a nationally televised event in which “tributes” must fight with one another until one survivor remains.

Pitted against highly-trained Tributes who have prepared for these Games their entire lives, Katniss is forced to rely upon her sharp instincts as well as the mentorship of drunken former victor Haymitch Abernathy.  If she’s ever to return home to District 12, Katniss must make impossible choices in the arena that weigh survival against humanity and life against love.
