Today we have the first photo from Jeff Nichols’ new film Mud, which can been seen above. This will of course be his follow up to the award winning Take Shelter, which has earned fantastic reviews.

Mud tells the story:

“Two fourteen-year-old boys who find a criminal named Mud, who will be played by Matthew McConaughey, on an island in the Mississippi. Instead of turning him in to authorities, they provide shelter; his goal is to get back to his true love (Reese Witherspoon) before authorities find him, and they help him out on this quest.”

Personally, I’m happy to see McConaughey taking the lead in this film. He’s been doing well with drama lately, giving us solid films like The Lincoln Lawyer and the upcoming Killer Joe which did well for itself at TIFF 2011. It’s nice to see him moving away from the chick flick genre and hopefully he’ll deliver another strong performance in Mud.

Mud stars Matthew McConaughey, Resse Witherspoon, Tye Sheridan, Michael Shannon, Ray McKinnon, Sam Shepard and Sarah Paulson and will be in cinemas in 2012.
