Presumably done reeling from his success with The Avengers and all the glory that making a billion dollar box office smash brings to a ginger-haired bald guy, Joss Whedon has reportedly started work on the sequel, the tentatively titled The Avengers 2. The latest is that Whedon has handed in his outline to Kevin Fiege, the President of Production and all-round bigshot over at Marvel. Picture him like Scrooge McDuck, bathing in gold coins.

Yes, the Buffy creator has started his journey on the sequel – which is set for a 2015 release date – after having unexpectedly directed the third highest-grossing movie of all-time, a movie which pits a bickering team of costume-clad superheroes against an alien race who fly out a sky portal to attack New York. We know: people will watch anything nowadays. How can we be sure that Whedon has done such a thing? Well, because of a snippet from a recent EW article, which relinquished the following information:

We met with him just days after he had submitted an outline for the 2015 sequel The Avengers, and as he was in the midst of preparing to shoot the pilot for what could be his next television series: S.H.I.E.L.D, a spy-fi drama tracking the ongoing adventures of the secret agents and superhero wranglers of Marvel’s movie world. If ABC he picks up the series, Whedon will remain involved as exec producer, and frequent collaborators Jed Whedon, Maurissa Tancharoen (Dollhouse, Dr. Horrible) and Jeffrey Bell (Angel) will serve as lead showrunners.

What do you make of that, then? Excited that The Avengers 2 has its plot written on a piece of paper somewhere despite the fact that you can’t see it? Any ideas as to what it the storyline might involve for this outing? Which characters can’t you wait to see back? Let us know all your Marvel-based thoughts in the comments section below.
