Keanu Reeves is in the midst of a pretty awesome comeback right now. After appearing in two of the most iconic action films of the 90s, and quite possibly of all-time, the actor didn’t have the best luck. In recent years, however, his fortunes have turned, and that’s mostly thanks to John Wick. The film saw Reeves play the titular hitman and though it didn’t do gangbusters at the box office, it became something of a cult hit and turned enough heads to warrant a sequel.
This weekend, John Wick: Chapter 2 shot its way into theaters and so far, things look promising for the flick. Reviews are very positive and though it’s going up against The LEGO Batman Movie and Fifty Shades Darker at the box office, it should have no trouble pulling in a good chunk of change. So, where does Keanu go from here? Well, a third Wick film seems like a pretty good bet, but before then, the actor will be pushing the pedal to the metal for Rally Car.
The project first popped up on Reeves’ radar a couple of years back, but now, The Hollywood Reporter is telling us that it’s starting to come together. An action-comedy set mostly in China, the film will see The Matrix star play a down in the dumps NASCAR driver who “gets a second chance at greatness when he enters a high-stakes international race across China.” Behind the camera will be Olivier Megaton, who gave us the horrible Taken sequels. So that doesn’t exactly bode well for the project, but everything else sounds promising.
Aside from Reeves, the other main role here will be that of a young Chinese woman who’s his teammate. From what we understand though, the part hasn’t been cast as of yet and there’s no indication of who may be in the running for it. We should know more soon, however, as Rally Car will speed in front of cameras this summer, with Lionsgate handling distribution. Which makes sense given that they’re also the ones behind the John Wick franchise.
In a statement released earlier this week, President Jason Constantine said the following:
“We are thrilled to be in business once again with Keanu Reeves, who is extraordinary in the John Wick franchise, and we believe Rally Car has tremendous potential to see Keanu in action once again, this time behind a steering wheel. Jeremy has done a great job with the screenplay, featuring a multinational cast of characters, and we’re happy to have Olivier directing another great movie for us.”
Though we’re not thrilled with Megaton’s involvement, the project does have us excited and it’s nice to see the Keanu Reeves comeback train continuing on full steam ahead. He’s a great actor when he’s got the right role and Rally Car sounds like another solid credit for his resume.
We’ll continue to bring you the latest on the in-development NASCAR drama as more emerges, but until that point, let us know your early impressions of it in the comments section down below!
