Amid news of Spider-Man’s departure and the inevitable backlash from fans to the announcement, the titanic piece of machinery that is the Marvel Cinematic Universe continues to chug along, hiring new talent for their ever-expanding roster of upcoming films. And this time, Marvel has set its sights on TV, at one of the most popular actors from one of the most successful television shows ever.
Yes, as you’ve surely heard by now, Kit Harington, who previously played Jon Snow on Game of Thrones, famous for not knowing anything, hooking up with his aunt and then stabbing said aunt, has joined the MCU. And earlier today at D23, Marvel revealed that the actor will be taking on the role of Black Knight in The Eternals. For those hoping he’d be the new Wolverine, this may come as a bit of a disappointment, but fans of the aforementioned character should definitely be excited by the news.
Of course, Black Knight has long been rumored for the MCU, with a brief shot of a strange city in the Quantum Realm in Ant-Man and the Wasp seemingly teasing his debut. And while it’s unclear which iteration of the character Kit will be suiting up as, we assume it’ll be Dane Whitman, the third Black Knight.
Nephew of supervillain Nathan Garrett and a descendant of the original heroic medieval knight, Sir Percy of Scandia, Black Knight wields a mystical sword and was even a part of the Avengers’ roster in the 80s and the 90s. He also had a romance with the Eternal Sersi, which we imagine will be explored in the upcoming film.
Unfortunately, details on Harington’s involvement in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as a whole and specifically, in The Eternals, still remain hazy, but we can at least confirm that he’ll be playing Black Knight and given that he’s a pretty big name, we imagine he’ll be sticking around for more than just one movie. As always, though, stay tuned for more as D23 is still ongoing.
