The new big screen version of Les Miserables has attracted some of Hollywood’s best known names. Even with several cast members already revealed, the competition for lead roles is still heating up.

Two major characters, Eponine and Cosette, are still being cast and it looks like there is no shortage of talented actresses up for the first part. Those in the running include Glee star Lea Michele, songbird Taylor Swift,  Scarlett Johansson, and Evan Rachel Wood.

The cast that has already been announced includes Hugh Jackman, Anne Hathaway, Russell Crowe, Helena Bonham Carter and Eddie Redmayne.

Director Tom Hooper was supposedly amazed by a recent audition from Michele, who played a young Cosette in the Broadway show several years ago. Michele has some steep competition though despite her proven talents. Other factors, including acting experience, may be weighing on the director’s decision – something that leaves Swift without much hope.

The character one of these lucky actresses might play is Eponine, a commoner trying to survive in her poverty and unrequited love. She also sings some of the more memorable songs.

Les Miserables is scheduled to begin filming as soon as casting is completed.  With an anticipated theatrical release date of December 7, 2012 they better get down to business soon.

We’ll keep you posted when we hear more.
