With big roles in The Hobbit and Sherlock behind him, Martin Freeman is now swapping fighting orcs and master criminals for surviving a zombie outbreak in upcoming UK indie thriller Cargo. We haven’t really seen too much of the film to date, but that’s now changed, as Bloody Disgusting have got their hands on a new bunch of images this week and you can check them out in the gallery down below.

From what we understand, Freeman plays a man named Andy in the movie, who’s described as a “father who, stranded in rural Australia in the aftermath of a violent pandemic and, infected himself, desperately seeks a new home for his infant child and a means to protect her from his own changing nature.” An updated synopsis also adds that “salvation may lie with an isolated Aboriginal tribe, but to gain access he must first earn the allegiance of a young Indigenous girl on a tragic quest of her own.”

The images seen above show Freeman as Andy alongside his infant daughter, as well as some of the supporting cast members. It’s hard to say exactly what’s going on in the pics, but we’re certainly intrigued by what we have here and look forward to learning more about the movie in the weeks and months to come.

Directed by Yolande Ramke and Ben Howling, and produced by Kristina Ceyton (The Babadook), the latter had this to say about Freeman’s involvement back when he signed on:

“Martin Freeman is a singular talent who will add such depth and emotional sophistication to the role, and we know will make this story come alive in an unexpected and deeply moving way.”

Cargo is currently without a release date, but is expected to find its way into cinemas later this year. As always, watch this space for more.
