When the news broke this past weekend that Zack Snyder will be directing the upcoming Justice League film immediately after Batman vs. Superman, an old rumor that Matt Damon would play Aquaman resurfaced as well. The actor’s name has been floating around the Justice League movie ever since his friend and frequent collaborator Ben Affleck was cast as Batman, so the fact that it came up again for Aquaman isn’t all that surprising.
The reaction to this news was, of course, divisive. Many fans have already been upset by the controversial casting choices that these DC films have given us so far, and throwing Damon into the mix only seemed to make things worse. Luckily for those naysayers, the actor himself has confirmed that he has not been approached for any roles, but says that he would certainly be interested.
Damon recently spoke to CNN (about water scarcity issues, no less), and was asked about the rumors. He jokingly said:
“Since they made Ben [Affleck] Batman, I’ve been showing up at his house every day dressed as Robin, but my little campaign I don’t think has gone too well so far.”
However, he may just be interested in the role if it would help his charity, Water.org:
“If dressing up in yellow tights somehow moved the needle on this issue, I would be willing to do that. I’ve done sillier stuff.”
So, there we have it. Personally, I never felt that the rumors had any weight, especially with someone like Jason Momoa being rumored for the part as well. Damon is a huge star and the producers likely wouldn’t waste him on a smaller character like Aquaman. Plus, Momoa would be a much better choice for the character, in my opinion at least.
