Maybe we shouldn’t count Big Ben out just yet?

Amidst rumors that Matt Reeves was looking to bring in a new actor for The Batman, not to mention someone around 20 years younger than Ben Affleck, the director himself has now spoken up to give us a firm update on where things are at with the project and according to him, he’s still talking with the Justice League star about the role.

This news comes to us from ComicBook.com, who report that Reeves made an appearance at the Television Critics Association’s summer press tour this week where he was quizzed on the status of The Batman. Apparently, he’s still speaking with Ben in regards to the project, though he stopped short of confirming whether or not the actor would be returning.

Instead, he offered up this cryptic tease:

“There are ways in which all of this connects to DC, to the DC universe as well,” Reeves said. “We’re one piece of many pieces so I don’t want to comment on that except to say that I’m focused very specifically on this aspect of the DC world.”

Continuing on, he refrained from spilling too much about the plot, but just said that the inspirations for the film are still the same as when he climbed on board.

“From the beginning, what I had always spoken about with Warner Brothers and what I was excited about was being in the Batuniverse and really doing something within that sphere,” Reeves said. “That was always what it was going to be so in that way it hasn’t changed a lot since I first met with them. It’s very much the same thrust if that makes sense.

A lot of things have happened since then but the movie, and why I’m excited about it, is it continues to be the same inspirations and excitement of what we talked about in the beginning.”

Though Matt Reeves is keeping things pretty vague here, and understandably so, it does sound like there’s at least a chance we’ll see Ben Affleck in the cape and cowl again. Although, there’s also been an overwhelming number of reports pointing to him being well on his way out of the DCEU – or should that be Worlds of DC? – so we can’t be too sure.

Regardless, it sounds like The Batman is inching closer to production now and with any luck, we’ll have some casting announcements to dig into before the year’s end
