Nato And Remy’s Netflix Watch Instantly Halloween Recommendations: Foreign Frightfests!

We're one week closer to Halloween, and that also means you've got one more week's worth of Netflix Watch Instantly recommendations coming your way to help celebrate the Halloween season. We've already brought you three different sub-genres worth of picks, totalling eighteen movies, but we've still got six more coming your way - and we did a little traveling this time. This week we're bringing you six foreign horror movies worth reading the subtitles for this Halloween, because they're too damn good to lazily ignore. I'm sure tons of you have seen the abysmally crappy zombie film Quarantine, but have you seen the Spanish language original ? No? Well, that's your own fault, because you're missing out on one of the greatest zombie films released this decade. I'm telling you, subtitles are not the enemy! You might even get lucky and find a dubbed version of some foreign horror movies, although I think the voice-overs remove authenticity - and are sometimes pretty crummy. With that said, let's take a look at some foreign horror movies worth streaming this Halloween! Remy - Hell Hell is a post-apocalyptic vision of the end of the world, but not at all how we expect it. While most end-of-the-world movies use an attack, or complete global catastrophe, Hell uses something as simple as the sun burning a little hotter and brighter. It's a much more toned-down (and therefore effective) way of showing us such a scenario, because it is inherently believable throughout the entirety of this film. Hell focuses on one family (sort of) who get separated by a rather nefarious group of survivors, and the HELL they must go through to find each other and escape their hunters. The best way I can describe the movie is by comparing it to The Walking Dead - without walkers. It really is. Hell shows us that if stripped down to our most primal instincts, we all become no better than wild animals. In most cases, actually, we seem to become worse. I would put Hell way up there, right beside The Road and The Time of the Wolf, as one of the best post-apocalyptic movies ever made. There is just something so gritty and yet, so realistic about the world they show us in this movie. Also, the washed out look that lends itself to the film works so well at making even the viewer feel they need water when they are watching this movie. This IS Hell, and a truly believable one at that. It's funny, I watched Hell and just kept thinking to myself: it's just a matter of time. Nato - Dead Snow Hey, remember how I was picking selections earlier and mentioned how I also wholeheartedly recommended Dead Snow as well, but didn't have room on my list? Well guess what appears in the "Foreign" film sub-genre of horror! Yes, Dead Snow absolutely deserves its own shout out (in my opinion), even though some of my horror loving brethren wrote this Norwegian zombie flick off. Not really sure why - it's got a ton of hilarious references to American cinema, is insanely gory, and has evil Nazi zombies! Well, Nazis are pretty much inherently evil, aren't they? You aren't going to find many nice Nazi's I'd assume - especially undead ones. The formula is generic - take some medical students who are looking to unwind and plop them on a snow-covered mountain in a remote cabin, have them discover some cursed gold, and let the zombies attack. Students being stalked in the middle of nowhere, we've seen it before, right? Yes, of course we have, but writer/director Tommy Wirkola is so damn focused on having as much bloody fun as possible. He creates this insanely inviting ode to the zombie genre, hacking up limbs and stringing along amazing death scenes that should make zombie fans heil Wirkola! (Yup, going to hell.) I'm almost positive there wasn't a single white patch of snow left, dyed a deep red from numerous slayings. Plus, Evil Dead reference anyone? See if you can spot it. Remy - Troll Hunter I know I have talked about this Norwegian gem before, but there is a very distinct reason I am bringing it up again in this column. Have you heard the news? Dog Soldiers and The Descent director, Neil Marshall, is directing the remake. Wait, but Troll Hunter JUST fucking came out, and SO it doesn't need a remake! I know, I know, I concur with you. There is nothing about the film that is not perfect. Hell, even the super-cheap special effects work incredibly well in the "found footage" formula. BUT, this is Neil Marshall we are talking about. The dude directed the BEST episode of Game of Thrones (that fucking green fire wins life) and also directed one of the best horror films EVER MADE. Yes, The Descent is one of the BEST HORROR FILMS EVER MADE, no question in my mind. So while it may not seem like we NEED a Troll Hunter remake, if the remake finally helps this movie find the audience it deserves, then I say kudos to Neil. Plus, the guy has a great eye for tension and a flair for the cinematic, so to assume he will fuck it up is to not give Neil Marshall the credit he deserves. Just what different elements he will bring to his remake no one knows just yet, but keep your eyes peeled for that film sometime in the near future. For now, watch the (badass) original. You will never look at giant rock formations the same way. Nato - Let The Right One In Coming into the horror game much later than some of my friends, Let The Right One In was the first horror movie that actually left me speechless - not because of terror, but because of beauty. Inspiring an American version starring Chloë Grace Moretz, Tomas Alfredson's Swedish vampire flick tells a heartwarming story about a bullied boy who befriends a vampiric girl, finding comfort and safety despite the girl's strange lifestyle. Ok, and when I say heartwarming, please note some scenes are pretty brutal, and the horror influence is definitely noticeable, but John Ajvide Lindqvist's screenplay catches every bit of emotionally staggering material, be it our poor little main character's outsider personality, or our vampire girl struggling to find some normalcy. These two kids share certain similarities, even if one's problems may be more supernatural, but their friendship is what speaks volumes. Kåre Hedebrant (Oskar) and Lina Leandersson (Eli) stun as our leading actors though, and are responsible for so much of the praise surrounding Let The Right One In. Without their prolific acting, especially from Leandersson, the dramatic depth and true passion would have been lost, and Alfredson's film might have deflated. Have no fear though, because Let The Right One In is one of the most touching horror films of the decade, showing up its American remake. Remy - Kidnapped Kidnapped might just be the best home invasion movie outside of Funny Games. Really. I know some people walk away from it fucked up, but that's not a bad thing when it comes to horror. In that sense, it very much belongs in the same breath as Funny Games. Kidnapped is a movie about a home invasion gone wrong (as if any can go right) - a movie about a hopeless situation that just seems to be getting more and more hopeless by the second. I will warn you right now, Kidnapped is NOT for the faint of heart. It has some truly upsetting moments, and mainly got panned by critics for the joy it seemed to derive from its own sheer cruelty and brutality. What needs to be understood for this film to work though is that this is HOW home invasions go down. Rarely do home invasions EVER end on a happy note. When you hear about them in the news, you hear about them because the family ends up getting killed - I think that is the scariest idea of a home invasion. You actually have very little chance of getting out alive (or sane). There are some rumors that the film is based on a true story, and the saddest part is, I am almost positive I am familiar with the case it was based on, which ended up getting its own documentary that I will talk to you about at a later date. Anyway, watch Kidnapped - if for no other reason than to use it as a blueprint for everything NOT to do if this ever happens to you. Nato - Dream Home Disclaimer: This movie will fuck your night up. It's sick, depraved, and grotesque, and that's by Asian extremism cinema standards. What's so unnerving isn't the obscurity though, as movies like Tokyo Gore Police and Vampire Girl vs. Frankenstein Girl go for the jugular of insanity. Dream Home instead remains disturbingly realistic, grounding actions through a perfectly human main character. Josie Ho plays a woman named Cheng, a girl obsessed with a specific apartment she wishes to own. Not having the money, Cheng devises a sinister plan to drive the apartment's cost down, and sets out killing other building attendants in hopes that prospective owners stay far away from the building with a "murderer" on the loose. Cheng dispatches victims in increasingly perverse ways, spilling entrails and spraying blood, but the most demented kill of all has to be Chen's assault on a pregnant mother. I've seen so many crazy horror kills, but the reality of something so simple shook me for days. Dream Home will invade your mindspace and leave you gasping - but is a must see for true horror fans. Alright kiddies, this is our fourth set of recommendations for this Halloween.
