But beauty is vicious, as the evocative one-sheet below teases, and after arresting our attention through Bronson to Drive to Only God Forgives, Refn’s latest creative effort casts light on the fashion industry and, specifically, its dark, unspeakable underbelly.
Due to land later this month via Icon Films and Amazon Studios, it is Elle Fanning’s new model on the block Jesse that anchors the story of The Neon Demon, spawning a twisted tale of psychotic jealousy when a group of industry veterans begin to swarm around Fanning’s pure and untainted star-in-the-making like vultures.
As today’s TV spots remind us, Refn has moulded Jesse’s arc into a visceral thriller, with many of the glossy sequences showcased simply dripping with a style that is both aesthetically pleasing and oddly disconcerting – from the strobe lighting to shots of a vulnerable Jesse in the clutches of the older, malicious models.
Rounding out the impossibly attractive cast alongside Fanning are Karl Glusman, Bella Heathcote, Jena Malone, Abbey Lee, Desmond Harrington, Christina Hendricks and John Wick himself, Keanu Reeves.
Nicolas Winding Refn will conjure up a nightmarish trip into the bowels of the fashion industry when The Neon Demon premieres on June 24. For now, you can indulge in those trippy TV spots, below.
