Netflix makes sneak edit to Will Smith joke in Chris Rock’s latest standup special

One of Chris Rock's jokes about Will Smith was removed by Netflix after the live broadcast.

Chris Rock‘s latest Netflix comedy special, Selective Outrage, was recently sneakily edited after the stand-up show’s initial live broadcast on Netflix. This comes after the comedian messed up one of the jokes during the live broadcast, which led to the streaming platform editing it out.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the joke in question was during the Will Smith section of the show, where the comedian poked fun at the actor who slapped him during the 2022 Academy Awards. However, the joke was not in reference to the infamous slap.

Rock retold the story of how Smith’s wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, told him to not host the Oscars back in 2016 because “her man didn’t get nominated.” Unfortunately, the comedian mixed up the films, accidentally saying Emancipation instead of Concussion. For those who don’t know, Emancipation was an Apple TV plus film Smith starred in post-Oscars slap after multiple projects were shelved due to the controversy. Meanwhile, Concussion was a sports drama released in 2015 that was snubbed at the 2016 Oscars.

“Years ago, his wife said I should quit the Oscars; I shouldn’t host ’cause her man didn’t get nominated for Emancipation, the biggest piece of shit ever! No, not Emancipation, I fucked up the joke.”

This segment was modified by Netflix after the live broadcast ended, and those who plan to watch the replay will no longer see Rock’s blunder on the streaming platform. The replay of the comedy special will now see the words “streamed live and edited,” when hovering over the scroll and bar and the segment in question would have made it look like Rock got the joke right in one go.

Selective Outrage was the first stand-up show post-Oscars slap where Rock finally addressed the infamous altercation between him and the Oscar-winning actor. While the actor did take jabs at Smith in the special, not everyone was happy with the comedian poking fun at Jada Pinkett Smith’s illness in the show.

If you want to see Rock’s comedy show, a replay of Selective Outrage is available to stream on Netflix.
