Nicolas Winding Refn Adapting The Incal

Nicolas Winding Refn's Only God Forgives hits theaters this July, but after that his next project is still up in the air. There's been talk of a Logan's Run remake, but nothing concrete has been announced in terms of a timetable, so who knows when that'll happen. But the director may have found his next project in an adaptation of the sci-fi comic series The Incal.

Nicolas Winding Refn’s Only God Forgives hits theaters this July, but after that his next project is still up in the air. There’s been talk of a Logan’s Run remake, but nothing concrete has been announced in terms of a timetable, so who knows when that may happen. But the director may have found his next project in an adaptation of the sci-fi comic series The Incal.

Alejandro Jodorowsky and Moebius’ epic graphic novel series takes place in a futuristic human-dominated galactic empire, with the story starting in the dystopian capital city of an insignificant planet. The hero is John DiFool, a P.I. and bodyguard who originally has no interest in being a hero, but gains powers when given the Light Incal by a dying Berg. Unfortunately for him, this power crystal is sought by many groups, and most will stop at no costs to get their hands (or alien tentacles) on it.

It’s regarded by many as one of the greatest comic series of all time. For some more context, the story is similar to The Fifth Element, so much so that Moebius and Jodorowsky sued director Luc Besson (though they did not win).

Here’s the deal: Between Drive and Bronson, you ought to be willing to see anything Refn puts out. He’s an innovative filmmaker with a knack for molding a quality story and coaxing the best out of the actors he works with. I would argue those two movies are the best performances from Ryan Gosling and Tom Hardy. I don’t doubt whoever is starring in The Incal is going to kill it as well. So the fact this is regarded by many as one of the greatest comic series of all time is simply a plus to the fact Refn is at the helm of a new sci-fi project. Heck, I’d watch a movie about a hardwood floor if this man directed it.

What do you think of Refn taking on The Incal? Are you excited to see the director’s work on this sci-fi comic? Share your thoughts in the comments section below.
