Leaked Avengers 4 Art Hints That Thanos Will Wield The Infinity Sword

Earlier this month, some juicy leaked concept art revealed that Thanos would be getting a new weapon in next May’s Avengers 4. Apparently, the Mad Titan will be swapping his all-powerful Infinity Gauntlet for a hefty sword instead. The weapon’s actually more like a double-sided meat cleaver than a sword and we wouldn’t fancy being any of the Avengers when faced with that in a fight.

The question is, though, what’s the exact nature of the sword? Why does the villain need it when he has another handy accessory that can do anything? Well, The Snap that occurred at the end of Avengers: Infinity War did seem to take its toll on the Gauntlet, as it appeared burned out and broken after Thanos had wiped out half of the universe with it. This would be a change from the comics, but it’s very possibly the Gauntlet is kaput now. In which case, maybe he needs another weapon with “infinity” in its name?

Enter the Infinity Sword. Express has theorized that perhaps this leaked concept art reveals that the little-known item that’s appeared in a few comics could be making its jump to the screen. If you know your Marvel animation, you might remember the Infinity Sword from its appearance on The Superhero Squad cartoon. It’s established on the series that the sword can be combined with the gauntlet to make it even more powerful. Which Thanos might be in need of following its breakage.

This is an interesting theory, though it’s worth pointing out the blade depicted in the concept art is a totally different design from the cartoon Infinity Sword. Perhaps the sword is just a mighty weapon that the Mad Titan is using to supplement his damaged arm then, which the Russos have hinted will not be healed by the point of the film’s time jump.

In any case, we’ll find out soon enough, as Avengers 4 arrives on May 3rd, 2019.
