Timothée Chalamet was cut from the ‘Barbie’ movie

“It felt like doing something without my children.”

Greta Gerwig‘s imminent Barbie movie is loaded to the brim with a massive A-list cast ensemble, featuring notable names like Margot Robbie, Ryan Gosling and Will Ferrell. Unfortunately, not everyone was able to make it to Barbieland, as two of Gerwig’s favorite actors couldn’t be included in the movie.

During an interview with CinemaBlend, Gerwig revealed that she also had plans for Timothée Chalamet after reflecting on Saoirse Ronan‘s absence in the Barbie Movie. The director said that she was annoyed that both Chalamet and Ronan were unable to make an appearance in the Barbie movie and that both of them would have received some specialty cameos. Regardless, she understood why they were absent.

“Well, it was going to have to be a sort of smaller thing because she [Ronan] was actually producing at the time, which I am so proud of her for. And of course, it’s brilliant. But it was going to be a specialty cameo. I was also going to do a specialty cameo with Timmy, and both of them couldn’t do it, and I was so annoyed. But I love them so much. But it felt like doing something without my children.”

Just like Ronan, Chalamet has also worked with Gerwig in the past on the 2017 film, Lady Bird. The film was nominated for Best Picture during the 2018 Academy Awards, and Chalamet was nominated for “Choice Drama Movie Actor” during the 2018 Teen Choice Awards.

Ronan talked about missing out on her Barbie appearance last year when she had told People Magazine that she was working on a film called The Outrun. She revealed that she had been going to play another Barbie character, but plans fell through due to the timing of her film’s production. However, she did agree to walk in the background somewhere if Gerwig planned to do some reshoots.

It’s a shame that Gerwig was unable to work with some of her old cast members, even if it was just for a small role. But then again, Barbie is already filled with a lot of star power. Some are Hollywood superstars, and others are promising up-and-comers.

Barbie will hit theaters on July 21, 2023.
