Come August, 20th Century Fox will be holding out hope that the third time really is a charm when the studio unveils its latest cinematic take on Marvel’s beloved Fantastic Four. With a completely reimagined version of the titular superheroes, Chronicle director Josh Trank is overseeing the action from behind the lens, and the latest trailer released today showcases our best look at the film – and its show-stopping special effects – to date.

Up until this point, the promotional material has laid the foundations of the core quartet, and how their physics-defying journey into an alternate dimension changes their lives beyond recognition. However, this latest clip offers up a much more complete version of Trank’s retelling, with many of the VFX shots at, or at least on the verge of, their finalized form. Interestingly, the intense lava shots look to be much more polished, and we even get to go up close and personal with Toby Kebbell’s big bad, Victor von Doom.

Beyond that, though, fans of the genre will likely experience déjà vu upon viewing, considering that Fantastic Four contains much of the landscape-destroying sequences we’ve seen countless times already.

That’s not to write off the film’s chances of making an impact next month, but the premise of a world on the brink of destruction is beginning to get a little long in the tooth, no thanks to the boisterous Marvel Cinematic Universe. Can Trank’s new take of one of the most endearing groups in superhero history rise above mediocrity? Time will tell.

Starring Miles Teller, Kate Mara, Michael B. Jordan and Jamie Bell, Josh Trank will bring his revised take on Marvel’s First Family to the silver screen when Fantastic Four opens in theaters on August 7.

Fantastic Four, a contemporary re-imagining of Marvel’s original and longest-running superhero team, centers on four young outsiders who teleport to an alternate and dangerous universe, which alters their physical form in shocking ways. Their lives irrevocably upended, the team must learn to harness their daunting new abilities and work together to save Earth from a former friend turned enemy.
