Universal’s female-fronted ensemble comedy Girl Trip, the same one that recently displaced Pitch Perfect 3 from its summer release window, has cast the net in search of its leading players, with Queen Latifah and Jada Pinkett Smith emerging as two early candidates.
Word of the casting arrives by way of Deadline, revealing that Latifah and Jada Pinkett Smith are on the verge of a reunion two decades on from rubbing shoulders in F. Gary Gray’s action-thriller Set It Off.
This time around, they’ll be trading criminal escapades for nostalgic trips down memory line. Also starring Regina Hall, the Malcolm Lee-directed feature chronicles the heartfelt story of “four friends who travel to New Orleans for the annual Essence Festival, where sisterhoods are rekindled and wild sides are rediscovered, with some drinking, romancing and even brawling thrown in for good measure.” Kenya Barris and Tracy Oliver are the brains behind the sisterly screenplay.
Before Pinkett Smith and Hall embark on their empowering Girl Trip, however, the former will be seen in maternal comedy Bad Moms, while Hall has lined up The Best Man Wedding.
Girl Trip is slated to open on July 21, 2017. As for Pitch Perfect 3, in making room for Latifah, Hall and Jada Pinkett Smith, the Barden Bellas won’t stage their reunion until December 22, 2017.
