Deadline is reporting that Warrior director Gavin O’Connor is planning to center his next film on the Yakuza. The Japanese crime thriller is said to follow “an American intelligence guru who gets in over his head dealing with the head of the crime syndicate, slipping even deeper into the seedy underworld of the Japanese criminal organization.”
I’m a big fan of O’Connor’s work. Warrior was one of 2011’s best films and I loved his cop movie Pride and Glory. There’s also his hockey film Miracle which is a favorite amongst sports fans.
The plot for this Yakuza film sounds interesting and I’m sure O’Connor will bring that same sense of grittiness and reality to it that we’ve seen with his other films. With a film like this it would be easy to fall into genre stereotypes but O’Connor has shown before that he’s no fan of that, so I don’t think we have to worry.
No news on casting or start date yet but when we hear more we’ll let you know.
